  1. 4.5 Goal: Comparing and Ordering Fractions • Something to think about? • Julie and Seth are kayaking down a river. Julie kayaks a distance of 7/10 mile, and Seth kayaks 3/4 of a mile. Who kayaked the greater distance?

  2. Definition The LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR (LCD) of two or more fractions is the least common multiple of the denominators. When comparing two or fractions: • Find the LCD of the fractions • Use the LCD to write equivalent fractions. • Compare the numerators.

  3. Example 1: Comparing Fractions Using LCD • To find who kayaked the greater distance we just talked about you need to compare 7/10 and 3/4

  4. Example 2: Ordering Fractions • Order the fractions 2/3, 3/8, 1/6, and 3/4 from least to greatest.

  5. Your Turn!!! • Copy and complete the statement using <> or =. • 5/8 __ 7/12 • 5/6__ 9/10 • 3/14__1/4

  6. Example 3: Comparing Fractions using Approximation • Use approximation to tell which fraction is greater, 13/24 or 15/34.
