  1. Tips For The New ASME.org

  2. Focusing On Adding Online Community Features Build an online community by adding interactive features to ASME.org and give engineers and others additional reasons to be engaged with ASME. Goals: • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing, and position ASME at the center of engineering discussions • Foster networking • Make participation in ASME communities convenient and easy; participants can get involved: • Whenever they want • As much or as often as they have time • Attract and engage a larger and broader range of engineers—younger, more diverse, and from more places

  3. Basics of Participating in ASME.org • Register at www.asme.org • Fill out your profile • You can import information from LinkedIn to make joining even easier. • Connect with your colleagues • Join Groups—Districts, Sections, Affinities, Technical Units, etc. • Want to learn more about another “open” Group? Join and receive updates to your dashboard. • Reach out to your unit members!

  4. Accessible on every page Registration at ASME.org • Accessible on the homepage for ASME.org; sign in if you have an SSO (single sign-on) • - Sign in with your SSO!

  5. Registration at ASME.org • Have an ASME SSO? Sign in here to become a participant. Don’t have an ASME SSO? Register here

  6. Is Your Section's online group page shown as currently inactive? It’s as easy as 1-2-3: Appoint a Group Admin (or two?) Make sure that person is a registered participant in ASME.org! Contact asmecommunity@asme.org with the Group Admin’s information Once the Group Admin is assigned, the Section page will be activated and the Admin will be able to access the Volunteer Group Admins Group and the “ASME.org Guidance for Volunteer Group Admins” manual located in its Resources area.

  7. Group Admin Responsibilities The Group Administrator is responsible for managing the Group’s settings and content pages as well as encouraging online group interaction and collaboration. The Group Administrator has the following rights: Manage Group settings for visibility and privacy Invite new Group participants Manage content, including the posting of documents and files Post announcements Manage who else has rights to administer Group

  8. Self-Forming Groups • Two types of Groups on ASME.org: • Official ASME Groups – all existing ASME Groups (e.g. Sections, Sub-sections, Groups, Student Sections) • Self-Forming Groups – groups which registered online participants can initiate (e.g. Uruguay) or other areas where no official ASME group • Self-Forming Groups will not be able to use names that are being used by Official ASME Groups or another Self-Formed Group. (e.g. Section, Sub-section, Student Section)

  9. Self-Forming Groups • Any registered participant can initiate the process. • Once it is set up, then the participant forming the Group can invite others to join. • Guidelines for Self-Forming Groups: • Does not duplicate an already existing Group (either Official or Self-Formed). • Is relevant to ASME’s mission.

  10. How to Set up Self-Forming Groups • Click on “Network” from www.asme.org • Select “Directory” and scroll down and type in keywords that describe your desired group (e.g. Uruguay) to see if there are any existing groups • If you get a message “no results found,” then your group won’t be a duplicate, and it’s OK to proceed • Scroll down and click “**Create a New Group” (bottom left) • It will ask you to search again. Type in keywords again • Scroll down and click “Continue to create a group.” • Give the group a name, a description, select desired status • Click “Create Group”

  11. Shows a District F Leader who is also a Participant in ASME.org • Photo visible • Links to her profile • Makes it possible for interested parties to send her a message via ASME.org • Shows a District F Leader who is not a Participant in ASME.org • No photo • No link • No contact option

  12. Contacting A Participant To send a message to an individual, visit his or her profile and choose “Send Message”

  13. Contacting Your Group Participants • Admin can message the entire Group (but only members and non-members who join as Participants)

  14. Tips for Using Your Group Page

  15. Creating Group Content • Only have a few minutes? Try: • Sharing links • Starting conversations • Commenting on an ASME.org articles • Announcing local activities or events of interest • Sharing updates/highlights from events • Share newsletter content as it comes in • Interview a member or share a story/ development • We’ll show you the various functionalities

  16. Group Admins can add announcements as well. This is located in the “Administration” section of the Group page, which is only open to Admins.

  17. Here’s how Announcements come up on Activity Feeds. They’re “sticky” to the top.

  18. Group Admins can create new pages, which will show up in the left-hand sidebar. Go to the Content Management page under Administration (only visible to Admins), and click “New Page.”

  19. This is what comes up when you create a new page. Be sure to Preview the page before publishing

  20. You can add files to the “Resources” page, which is a page dedicated to documents from your Section. Visit the “Resources” page in the sidebar, then select “Upload New File.”

  21. Be sure to choose public or private depending on how visible you want it to be. Public is visible to everyone; private is only visible to Group participants.

  22. Encourage Section Members to Join! • Use your Section roster to get the word out • Be sure to include a direct link to your Group page to make it easy for your members to join once they’ve registered • Want to increase participants? • Cross-promote on other social media outlets • Encourage all members to post and share • Comment on other Group pages
