  2. What is test score? Do we need a score? Why? Shaida who is studying in School A gets a score of 64 and Sheeza who is studying in school B gets 32 in an English test What does this mean? Who is better ? Shahida? Or Sheeza? These score are difficult to interpret because they are raw score. Raw scores can be confusing if there is no reference made to a “unit”. • Raw score is logical when u convert it into a unit such as %.

  3. Shaida scored 64% and Sheezascored 32% Is 64% good? Or average? This score is not enough to take a decision. More information should be given about the marks obtained, and to do this we need statistics!

  4. To get a more accurate picture of the score obtained by students the teacher should : • Highest marks in the class, and number of questions correctly answered • Lowest mark in the class and the number of questions correctly answered • Number of questions correctly answered by all students in the class.

  5. Nahida , scored : 80 in science72 in Maths and 40 in English What can you say about Nahida’s performance? How can you make these score meaningful?

  6. With some more information it can be more meaningful! • Science : Mean = 90 and Standard Deviation = 10 • Maths: Mean =60and Standard Deviation = 12 • English : Mean = 40 and Standard Deviation = 15

  7. Lets analyze the science score • Raw score = 80 • Mean = 90 • SD =10 • Z score = marks - mean 80- 90/10 = -1 The z score shows her raw score for science is one standard deviation below mean SD

  10. How do we communicate this score to the parents? • We change the Z score into T score! • What is T score? • A T score is a standardized score with a mean of 50 and a Standard Deviation of 10. T = 10(z) + 50
