  1. 16ng - IPv6 over IEEE 802.16(e) Problem Statementdraft-jee-16ng-problem-statement Junghoon Jee Myung-Ki Shin, Jaesun Cha, ETRI Eun-Kyoung Paik, KT Gabriel Montenegro, Microsoft 16ng BoF, IETF64

  2. Introduction • IEEE 802.16(e) is different from IEEE 802.11 or 3G. • Complete description of “IPv6 operation over IEEE 802.16(e)” is not present in IEEE 802.16 and WiMAX specs. • “IPv6 operations over IEEE 802.16(e)” can benefit from IETF inputs and specifications. 16ng BoF, IETF64

  3. Problem Statements • Transmission of IPv6 Packets over IEEE 802.16(e) is not yet specified. • What’s investigated. • Default link MTU size : 2041 octets • Path MTU Discovery needs to be performed. • Usage of MAC address in IEEE 802.16(e) • Not used for IP packet transmission • IP to Connection I-D mapping does happen for IP packet transmission • Does this imply there is no need to perform address resolution, IP to MAC even it has MAC address ? • Stateless Auto-Configuration and link local address configuration is possible using 48-bit universal MAC address. 16ng BoF, IETF64

  4. Problem Statements (2) • How to configure ”an IPv6 link” needs to be specified, because this impacts the basic IPv6 operation like NDP. • Cellular way • Separate IPv6 links between each SS and BS • Ethernet way • Common IPv6 link among SSes under an IPv6 router whether they are connected to one BS or not. • No multicast connection in IEEE 802.16(e) which can be used for multicasting IPv6 control packets like NDP. 16ng BoF, IETF64

  5. Problem Statements (3) • FMIPv6 over IEEE 802.16e work • Predictive Mode support • Informational RFC through MIPSHOP WG • IP multicasting & MBS interworking 16ng BoF, IETF64
