  4. Evaluation Criteria • Fits one of the assigned categories • Clearly addresses the ESLRs • Sufficiently rigorous • Reasonable scope • Acceptable mentor • Related research paper topic

  5. The Proposal Letter • Business Letter: Block Format, to Project Proposal Panel • Explain exactly what you propose to do for the 24 hours • Tell why this activity is significant to you • Include mentor name and qualifications • State research topic

  6. Proposal Evaluation Committee • English & Social Studies teachers • Administrators

  7. What is a mentor? • A wise and trusted teacher • An adult with experience and knowledge pertaining to your project • Someone who can oversee your work • Someone who will want to see your presentation • Someone who will support you when the work gets difficult

  8. What are the ESLRs?Our Goals: Expected School-wide Learning Results • Be a creative and critical thinker • Be an effective worker • Be an effective communicator • Demonstrate ability with technology • Contribute to the community • Demonstrate basic living skills

Parent Acknowledgment It is important that I know your parents know what you are doing for your senior project because: • It is a graduation requirement. • It might cost them some money. • They might think your idea is too dangerous. • They may have an objection to some aspect of your project.

  10. The Activity • Spend 24 hours (minimum) outside the school day • Keep track of your time on a calendar • Have your mentor sign the calendar to verify your hours • Have a visual product to present to your panel

Senior Boards • Practice your presentation in English class • Give formal presentation to Senior Board • Ten minute speech • Ten minute question and answer period • Visual component (examples) • Product of project • Poster with pictures of process • Power point demonstration with pictures • Video, CD, or DVD • Dress professionally

  14. When does all this happen? First semester • Proposal • Write and finalize research paper Second semester • Resume/References • Letter of introduction • Reflective paper

When is the project due? • Projects should be completed by May 1 • Practice presentations begin in class around the first of May depending on how many students are in your section of English • Senior Boards are from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on the Tuesday and Wednesday preceding Grad Night • May 26, 27, 2009

  16. In conclusion • Read through panel evaluations and comments • Write thank you letters to panel members • Study for your finals • Practice commencement exercises
