  3. Frequently asked questions Write the text in RED on the next slide, please

  4. What? An informative essay (informs about a topic) • How long is it? 4 paragraphs • What are they? Intro. -> Body 1 -> B2 -> Concl. • Where do my quotes come from? 2 articles on heroes • How long am I writing this? Brainstorming and writing today; finishing and turning it in next class • ALL ESSAYS ARE DUE BY THE END OF NEXT CLASS!

  5. For the rest of these slides • I need you to copy down all the text on these slides (unless I tell you differently) • I know it seems like a lot • BUT this is ALLLLLLLL to help you – because this essay is a major grade • If you do not copy this material down, this essay and every other essay will be really really hard for you

  6. Intro. Par. • Open with general remarks on topic for a few sentences; this essay’s topic = what it means to be a hero • Lastsentence of intro. is your thesis – it sums up the point of your WHOLE essay. Sample Thesis for this essay (pick 1): Option 1) In these articles, Zoe Miller and Philip Zimbardo show us that a true hero _______________________________. Or Option 2) According to these articles, the qualities a person needs to be a hero are [quality 1] and [quality 2]. 3. Intro. = 5-6 sent.

  7. Body par.’s (2) • Where text evid. will be (2 quotes per par.) • First, topic sentence • Text evidence (always introduce quotes like this [In the article, whoever says, “…..”]) • explain how quote proves your point for 2 sentences • [repeat steps B-C] • Write a conclusion sentence For EACH body paragraph 2. BP = 8 sent. ***BP #1 – Miller article BP #2 – Zimbardo article*** Handout

  8. Example [on handout] 1) The most important theme of “The Ugly Duckling” is that narrow-minded people see differences as ugliness. 2) For example, at the beginning of the story, the other ducklings do not like the “ugly duckling” because he is small, not good at waddling, and much better at swimming than they are. 3) This shows that their reasons for shunning the “ugly duckling” are based only upon the ways in which he is different from them. 4) This shows that narrow-minded people refuse to accept others who are not similar to themselves. 5) In addition, towards the end of the story, the “ugly duckling” sees his reflection and meets his swan family, realizing that he is neither “ugly” nor a “duckling.” 6) This shows that although he might have been seen as an “ugly duckling,” he is, in truth, a beautiful “swan.” 7) This shows that a person who compares himself to the wrong group of people is likely to see himself as ugly and inferior, while if he decides to be open-minded and accepting of others, he will eventually discover the truth about himself. 8) The main lesson that this story teaches is that people who dislike others because they are different are needlessly prejudiced.

  9. But remember, make sure your paragraph looks like a paragraph! The most important theme of “The Ugly Duckling” is that narrow-minded people see differences as ugliness. For example, at the beginning of the story, the other ducklings do not like the “ugly duckling” because he is small, not good at waddling, and much better at swimming than they are. This shows that their reasons for shunning the “ugly duckling” are based only upon the ways in which he is different from them. This shows that narrow-minded people refuse to accept others who are not similar to themselves. In addition, towards the end of the story, the “ugly duckling” sees his reflection and meets his swan family, realizing that he is neither “ugly” nor a “duckling.” This shows that although he might have been seen as an “ugly duckling,” he is, in truth, a beautiful “swan.” This shows that a person who compares himself to the wrong group of people is likely to see himself as ugly and inferior, while if he decides to be open-minded and accepting of others, he will eventually discover the truth about himself. The main lesson that this story teaches is that people who dislike others because they are different are needlessly prejudiced.

  10. Conc. Par. • Function: wraps up your thoughts • SIMILAR TO intro., but not exactly same • Close out essay with thoughtful idea on the topic • Concl. = 4-5 sent.
