  3. Clinical Work-up • Presented for colic that was non-responsive to Banamine and sedation • Clinical signs: • Dehydration, tachycardia, tachypnea • Copious nasogastric reflux when tubed • Distended small intestine on ultrasound and palpation • Diagnosed a renal mass on ultrasound Presented at SEVPAC 2008 – Permission granted for use on SEVPAC website only

  14. Morphologic Diagnosis • Malignant nephroblastoma, triphasic, kidney, with metastasis to liver, spleen, and mesentery. Presented at SEVPAC 2008 – Permission granted for use on SEVPAC website only

  15. Wilms’ tumor in children • Inactivation of the Wilms’ tumor gene (WT1) • WT1 protein is a transcription factor that functions as a tumor suppressor gene • Is expressed during renal and gonadal development • Defects in WT1 gene prevents normal differentiation of metanephric stem cells • Other genetic defects identified in children with Wilms’ tumor ( including WT2, WT3, WT4) Presented at SEVPAC 2008 – Permission granted for use on SEVPAC website only
