  6. Advantages (of online vs. traditional quizzing) • Immediate feedback • may encourage & enhance productivity and participation • Accessibility –anywhere, any time • Statistical analysis of the results • Students learn a variety of ways to take tests

  7. Advantages • Time and cost-effective to implement: no paper etc. • Accurate • Flexible, easily customized • Could be at students’ own pace • Multimedia-capable

  9. Disadvantages • Problems with access • Test security, confidentiality • Less control over testing conditions • Open book, open notes (therefore how much does the student really know or are they scrambling to find the information during the testing times) • Additional assistance needed?

  10. Disadvantages • Timing– limits, penalty for going over • Disconnects during the test, internet congestion • User tech skill disparity • Not suitable for testing certain skills • Most suitable for objective questions • Development costs –requires regular updating & a large test bank

  11. Disadvantages • Scoring can be quite rigid • Fairness- student training required • No personal feedback • Requires a contingency plan

  12. Confidentiality Keep tests short and sweet Restricted access/security Practice tests Suggestions Backup plan Randomize questions Parameters of the test- spelling mistakes etc.

  13. If you decide to use online quizzing as part of the evaluation process ensure that it is only one of many evaluation components.

  14. On the other hand… If you decide to use online quizzing as part of the learning process provide as many possibilities and as much variety as possible.

  16. Why Would You Use Quizzing as Part of the Learning Process? • Stimulating • Fun • Disadvantages become obsolete • Reviews content creatively • Develops comfort level with both technology and quizzing • Can promote group cohesion through collaboration

  18. Conclusion Online quizzing can be used effectively as an integral part of the learning process. If you wish to use it as part of the evaluation process it is critical to address the many areas which may disadvantage students or interfere with an accurate assessment of student learning.
