  3. That’s why we: • Fund research to develop new treatments and ways to prevent stroke • Campaign to improve stroke care

  5. Local Picture – Somerset • Approximately 1000 people a year will have a stroke • There are currently 12,000 people living with the effects of stroke in Somerset • This is estimated to rise to over 15,500 by 2020 • West Somerset has one of the oldest populations in Europe

  6. Leading cause of disability in this country The second biggest killer in the world

  7. stroke is a Brain Attack A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off or there is bleeding in the brain Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to the brain. Without a blood supply, brain cells can be damaged or destroyed.

  8. Death of tissue (infarction) because of blockage by: • Thrombosis a solid clot of blood in artery supplying brain or • Embolism a clot or other substance (fat, cholesterol, blood platelets) carried from elsewhere in circulation

  9. Haemorrhage (20%) • Bleeding in the brain • Burst blood vessels or artery • High blood pressure can weaken artery • Burst and damaged tissue • Brain damage is the result

  10. Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is a warning sign of a future stroke – about one in four people who have a TIA will go onto have a full stroke in the future • 20,000 TIA’s every year • Symptoms of TIA’s are the same as stroke • TIA symptoms can last up to 24 hours, but will sometimes resolve within 5 to 20 minutes • Dial 999 if you or someone you know have any of the symptoms of a TIA

  12. If the person has failed any one of these tests call 999 immediately By calling 999 you can help someone reach hospital quickly and receive the early treatment they need Prompt action can prevent further damage to the brain and help someone make a full recovery

  14. Campaigning to prevent stroke • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common type of irregular heartbeat that causes about one in six strokes. • Our Ask First campaign raises awareness of the link between AF and stroke.

  15. Home visits to people after discharge from hospital • Stroke specific – information and advice • Signposting – local stroke clubs, national benefit advice etc. • Emotional support • Carer support

  16. Supporting the NHS & Social Services • Embedded in the Somerset Stroke Pathway • Joined up working to prevent: • Cost of readmissions into hospital • Cost of admissions to Care & Nursing Homes • Cost of acute mental health care • Risk of family breakdown
