The parts of Edward Grim’s story that suggest that Becket was very religious man are where he says that Becket “It is wrong to ………………………………………..” and “I am here as …………………………………………”. The parts of Edward Grim’s story that suggest that Becket was a very stubborn are where he told the knights that he would not run from their swords / daggers and where he refused to forgive the people that he had expelled (thrown out of) the church / cathedral. There is also the part where he holds onto the pillar / pillow to stop the knights from dragging him out of the church. The parts of the story that suggest he was a very brave man are where he told the monks to open the door / gates and where he shows that he is not scared of the knights by telling them that he would not forgive the people he had excluded / expelled from the church. .

Who was to blame for the argument that led to Becket’s murder? • Things which show that the Archbishop had upset some Bishops. • Ralph of Diceto says that the knights demanded that Becket should allow the Bishops he had expelled from the church to be given back their jobs / croziers. • Things which show that the Archbishop had upset the King. • Edward Grim said that the knights called Becket a “traitor to the king / queen”. • Ralph of Diceto said that the knights “demanded in the name of King Henry II / Queen Eleanor”. .

Months before the Murder. • New facts that help to explain the murder. • In July 1170 Henry and Becket “patched up their arrow / quarrel”. • In December 1170 Becket broke his promise and excluded / expelled all the Bishops / Priests who had supported the King / Queen. • Advice given to the King by the Priests / Bishops, that Becket should be dead! • Henry flying into a rage and asking someone to “rid me of this ……”. • The four knights going to Kent to show their loyalty to King Henry / William. • Parts of the story I still don’t understand. • What had Henry and Becket been qu….lling about? • What was Becket’s “pr…se” to the King? • Why was it wrong for the Bishops to support the King while Becket was away?

Blood on the Cathedral FloorWhy was it so difficult to control the Church? • Page 64 “Think” Questions. • How Becket’s actions made the quarrel worse: • Picture 4: He refused to end the power of the Church courts / cloisters. • This made the situation worse because Henry and Becket had worked well together to increase the power of the King over the wicked barons / dragons. • Picture 4: He expelled a baron from the Church / cloisters. • This made Henry very angry because Henry believed that he was the only person who should have the power to do this. Becket was proving / disproving that he had the power to use the Church courts. • Picture 5: In 1164 / 1461 Becket changed his mind about all serious Church court cases being tried again in the King’s courts. • This infuriated Henry and Becket ran away to France / Spain, which made Henry even angrier / happier!

How the King’s actions made the quarrel worse : Picture 3: Henry asked Becket to be Archbishop of Canterbury / York. This made the situation worse because Henry hoped that Becket would use his new position to reduce / increase the power of the Church courts. Becket did not believe that the King had the power to make him Bishop / Archbishop and he wanted to protect Church privileges, like the courts, from the King / Pope. Picture 5: Henry passed a new law that said all serious Church court cases had to be tried again in the King’s courts.. This made Becket very angry because he believed that he was the only person who should have the power to do this. Henry was proving / disproving that he had the power to control the Church courts. Picture 6: Henry ordered the Archbishop of York / Canterbury to crown his son. This infuriated Becket, because it should have been done by the Archbishop ofCanterbury / York. This is why Becket expelled some Bishops from the Church.
