  2. Overview • Dive Today – a Philosophy • Discover Scuba • Discover Scuba Diving • Discover Snorkeling • Skin Diver • Marketing Workshop

  3. – a Philosophy • What is Dive Today? • A simple approach to introducing people to diving – you lead with the dive experience • Traditional approach led with academics – this turned many people off • To compete with other recreations, adopting this philosophy is crucial

  4. – a Philosophy • What is Dive Today? • It promotes the concept that anyone who is diving is a diveror is snorkeling is a snorkeler • Anytime you breathe off scuba underwater, you’re diving – even in a pool • Anytime you use a mask and snorkel to peer underwater, you’re snorkeling • It encourages inclusion rather than exclusion – it welcomes first time divers

  5. – a Philosophy • How do you incorporate Dive Today into scuba and snorkeling programs? Get people into the water as soon as possible • Refer to both confined water and open water experiences as dives • Call participants and students – divers or student divers

  6. – a Philosophy • How do you incorporate Dive Today into scuba and snorkeling programs? • Highlight how knowledge development supports and enhances the dive experience • Encourage independent learning • Keep knowledge review sessions concise • Explain how dive experience may be credited toward other PADI programs

  7. Discover Scuba • What is the purpose and value of the Discover Scuba experience? • It allows people to try diving in a pool or other confined water site • Letting people see how easy and fun it is overcomes their anxiety and objections • Some people hesitate to commit to a course – being able to try it answers their questions • To compete with other recreations, people must be able to dive quickly and conveniently

  8. Discover Scuba • What is the purpose and value of the Discover Scuba experience? • Bubblemaker (part of DS) introduces youngsters to scuba diving • Because life-long interests begin in childhood, it’s important for the dive industry’s future

  9. Knowledge ReviewDiscover Scuba

  10. Discover Scuba Discover Scuba Instructor Guide • How do you conduct the Discover Scuba experience? At the confined water site: • Have participants complete and sign the PADI Discover Scuba/Discover Scuba Diving Statement • Review important information using the Discover Scuba Diving Flip Chart • Help participants don and adjust their equipment • Review breathing rules, equalization techniques and regulator clearing • Supervise participants as they swim and play • Have games and water toys to enhance experience

  11. Discover Scuba • How does Discover Scuba link to other PADI programs? • When conducted by a Teaching status PADI Instructor, participants may learn the skills from Confined Water Dive One of the Open Water Diver course • Participants should be comfortable and express a desire to learn more • Don’t introduce skills too soon — it detracts from the experience

  12. Discover Scuba • How does Discover Scuba link to other PADI programs? • Participants who master the skills may earn credit towards the PADI Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver course OR the session may count as Waterskills Development for Discover Scuba Diving

  13. Discover Scuba • How can you market and promote the Discover Scuba experience? Show — Scuba: Experience Your First Breath

  14. Discover Scuba • How can you market and promote the Discover Scuba experience? • Offer Discover Scuba anytime a customer asks about trying diving • Be ready to jump in the water whenever it’s convenient for customers • Schedule regular sessions or offer it whenever other training is occurring in confined water • Conduct experiences at a variety of social events — parties, meetings, conventions, trade shows, community events, fairs, etc.

  17. Discover Scuba Diving • What is the purpose and value of Discover Scuba Diving? • Conducting Discover Scuba Diving experiences is a primary business in resort areas, however, it may be conducted anywhere that offers noncertified divers a positive and enjoyable experience

  24. The snorkeling market is huge – it includes almost everyone –yet few snorkelers seek out the services of dive professionals. Why? Discover Snorkeling

  25. Discover Snorkeling • Why? 1. You don’t need instruction to have fun snorkeling. 2. You don’t need fancy equipment to snorkel. 3. You don’t need a guide to explore a local site. 4. Snorkelers associate dive centers, dive resorts, and dive instructors exclusively with scuba diving. 5. Scuba divers talk about snorkeling as a “boring” activity compared to diving or suggest that snorkeling is a “step down” from diving. Thus, snorkelers avoid things associated with scuba diving.

  26. Discover Snorkeling • What is PADI’s snorkeling philosophy? • People want to see and interact with the underwater world — snorkeling is a means to see what’s below the surface • Snorkeling is easy and safe — no instruction is necessary, but professional guidance is helpful • Snorkelers may not want to be scuba divers

  27. Discover Snorkeling • What is the purpose and value of Discover Snorkeling? • It takes the approach that snorkeling is a valid activity • Snorkelers can benefit from the services of dive professionals • Services must bedifferent and separate from those offered to scuba divers • It allows you to tap into the snorkeling market with an informal program • Offer it to snorkelers using masks and snorkels or those using supplied air snorkeling units

  34. PADI Skin Diver • What is the purpose and value of the PADI Skin Diver course? • Not everyone wants to, or can, be a scuba diver — yet for some snorkeling is not enough • Course allows divers to enjoy themselves while building confidence in their skin diving ability, developing judgment and gaining experience under supervision • For 8 and 9-year-olds who are too young for scuba, earning a PADI Skin Diver certification is an important and rewarding step

PADI Skin Diver Skin Dive Instructor Guide • How is the PADI Skin Diver course structured? • Water Training covers techniques of donning equipment, entering the water, checking buoyancy, surface swimming, snorkel clearing and surface dives • Session may take place in a pool or other confined water site • Divers must meet the performance requirements • Schedule additional sessions • Although optional, the dive adds value • Conduct it whenever possible to let divers apply what they’ve learned while exploring a dive site

  38. PADI Skin Diver • How does the PADI Skin Diver course link to other PADI programs? • Open water dive is the same as the Optional Skin Dive from the Open Water Diver course • PADI Skin Diver, PADI Scuba Diver and PADI Open Water Diver students can all participate in the dive, which may allow families to complete portions of their training together • PADI Divemasters or AIs can independently conduct the dive, which allows the PADI Instructor to work with other student divers • Use Discover Snorkeling program materials to supplement training and add interest
