Definitions PDA – personal digital assistant, aka “handheld” Smartphone – a combination of a PDA and a phone; many consider this the future direction of most handhelds Sync – communication between a PDA and a desktop or laptop • Palm OS - “HotSync” • Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) - “ActiveSync” PIM–personal information management – the leather organizer goes electronic, by allowing interaction with Outlook, Groupwise, etc.

  8. Getting Started Whether you are buying your first PDA or upgrading from an earlier model, there are some key steps to getting your PDA ready for use.

Getting Started Before turning on your PDA • When you remove your PDA from the box, make sureto read all of the contents carefully. • Place the contents in a secure place because you may need to reference them later. • This may sound obvious, but people tend to forget that depending on the model, you will either need toput in batteries or charge your PDA to make sure it is “juiced-up.”

Getting Started Preparing your computer for your PDA • There is a CD in the box to load onto your computer that will walk you through the initial set-up of your particular model • It gets your computer and PDA ready to talk to each other • It will also introduce you to the basic functionsof your PDA

  11. Getting Started Upgrading to a new PDA • If you are upgrading from an earlier model, the set-up should be fairly seamless • You will still need to install the CD included with your new model • But don’t worry, the information that was on your old PDA will remain on your new one

  12. Moving On... • People most commonly use PDAs for personal information management (PIM) • Beginning with PIM is probably the easiest way to start and the best way to get to know your PDA

  13. Moving On... Creating or updating your address book • For most people, it is easier to use a computer to type in your address book and calendar. PDAs will sync with current address books you may have on your computer (e.g. MS Outlook) • Enter the phone numbers you use everyday into your address book – work, family or friends • Use the calendar to enter appointments, birthdays and annual events

Syncing your PDA with your computer • Once you have typed in all of your desired information, you need to sync it to your PDA • After syncing the info it will appear on your handheld • Spend time getting to know how to input data and how to use the different programs on your computer – it will pay off in the long run

Just like the computer world of Macs and PCs, there are different operating systems for PDAs. • Palm-based systems – Mostly Palm and a few others • Windows Mobile - HP, Dell and others • Blackberry- Only available on Blackberry hardware, not many medical applications are available

Choosing your PDA • Just like there is not ONE computer, TV or car for everyone… There are different handhelds/PDAsand smartphones to fit anyone’s needs • Evaluate what you would like to do with a PDA or smartphone: • MP3? Camera? Amount of memory needed? Wireless? Smartphone? GPS?

More things to consider: Go to the electronics store and actually put a few of them in your hand and try them out (even if you buy it online) • Consider an entry level handheld or smartphone • You can always upgrade to an advanced model later if you want. Occasionally buyers are overwhelmed if there are too many functions • Consider buying the same platform (Palm or Windows Mobile) as your colleagues, friends and family • That way you can have your own personal “tech support”

Downloading the Directory to Your PDA Directions to download the Palm OS version: • Click to download the address book, you will get a window that asks you to open the file or save it to disk. • Save the file to disc in your "My Downloads" folder. • Once you have downloaded the address book. From within your Palm Pilot software inside your address book, click on categories and choose edit categories, then add a new category named "CNMC Physicians." • Once inside your new category, choose file - import and import the address book from your "My Downloads" folder, the file name is "cnmc_physician.aba". • That’s it! All of CNMC physicians will be in your palm. • Download the Excel 2000 version • Download the Palm OS version
