Jeffery David Whippo Shares His Views On What Went Wrong on Kmart’s End during Its Battle with Wal-Mart

According to Jeffery David Whippo, when the battle between Kmart and Wal-Mart was in full force, Antonini narrow-mindedly focused only on his strengths, which were marketing and merchandising, and focused predominantly in only these two areas in terms of strategy. Jeffery says that while Kmart focused on marketing, Wal-Mart focused on operations. While Kmart's CEO, Mr. Antonini, chose to follow the classic textbook approach to marketing and merchandising, Mr. Walton looked to focus on process and organizational practice. Whippo also indicates that while Kmart targeted private labels, Walmart focused on what the customer is asking for, and that is low prices.

Unlike Kmart, Wal-Mart tried to control costs through the innovations of their supply chain right from the beginning of their battle with Kmart. While Kmart’s CEO, Mr. Antonini, chose to follow the classic textbook approach merchandising, Mr. Walton looked to focus on process and organizational practice.
