  3. Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center offers effective conflict resolution training for school aged youth

  4. The Youth Program provides workshops in partnership with K-12 schools, the juvenile justice system, and community organizations

  5. Youth learn to identify the root of conflict, recognize personal triggers, and manage emotions involved in conflict

  6. Youth also learn effective communication skills and strategies to prevent violence

  7. In 2012 WDRC partnered with 15 local schools and community organizations to bring conflict resolution workshops to students throughout Whatcom County

  8. 88% of participants reported learning new ways to solve their problems without hurting or scaring others

  9. 87% of participants had a better understanding of how human needs related to conflict

  10. Responses from students -5thgrader after classroom presentation -Youth Program participant -Youth Program participant “It helped me learn good ways to deal with conflict and that some people have the same triggers as me.” “I’ve used the ‘I statement’ with my mom and dad to negotiate.” “I used active listening and cool downs and it has strengthened my relationships.”

  12. 83% of teachers and counselors said the program was “important to very important to their students”

  13. Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center also offers effective conflict mediation services for teens and their parents

  14. Parent-teen mediation promotes a fuller understanding of the conflict and empowers participants to communicate, solve problems, and reach solutions that will work for their unique situation

  16. In showing that conflict is normal and that resolution is attainable, the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center serves as a vital resource to youth and the community
