  3. Roots of the Cold War • Essential Questions: • What conditions lead to the beginning of the Cold War?

  4. Cold War Definition • A state of tension and hostility between the United Sates and Soviet Union from 1945-1991. • Wars fought between allies (Proxy War) • Nuclear build up • Never direct fighting between US and USSR

Roots of the Cold War • During WWI and WWII, the US and USSR are allies. • Roosevelt and Stalin work together to defeat Hitler. • However, US supported Tsar during the Russian Revolution • Don’t want Communism • 1944 Roosevelt developed slogan : “the war on fascism ends; the war on capitalism begins.”

  7. Yalta Conference – Feb. 1945 • Big 3: Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin • Repair war torn Europe • Stalin Gets • Land returned to USSR • Power to Rebuild E. Europe • FDR/Churchill Gets: • USSR helps in war against Japan • Guarantee of free elections in E. Europe

  8. Potsdam Conference – July 1945 Meet again after Germany Surrender. This time Truman, Churchill, Stalin, and other EUR leaders

  9. Outcomes at Potsdam • Germany surrenders all conquered lands • Germany pays 10% of Soviet damages in occupied zone • Military occupation and rebuilding of Germany • Divided into 4 zones, Berlin divided too.
