The purpose of the ICT component • To provide a quick and efficient means of disseminating curriculum, learning materials and resources over long distances • To provide systematic storage for these materials and a means of working with them to create new classroom materials • To provide for the development of supportive learning communities over long distances, and ongoing peer support

  10. Hardware • One computer with Internet access, printer, scanner and digital camera at each school • One computer with printer per teacher • One computer with printer for each EMDC official directly involved in the project

  11. Hardware - where will it come from? • The Telecomms Project will have supplied each school with a computer, printer and Internet access • Khanya has been approached to supply computers for teachers • EMDCs have received computers for officials

  12. Deployment of teachers’ computers • Preferred plan: teachers’ computers at school • Second choice: computers at a convenient centre • Third choice: computers in teachers’ homes

  13. Software • Khanya: computers pre-loaded with operating systems, email, web browser and Microsoft Office Suite • Database for learning materials and resources

  14. Preparation for change in the school • Principal, governing body and teachers • Costs of maintenance of computers and consumables • Telephone costs • Security • Computer centre costs? • Teachers’ time for training • Changes in school administration • Changes in teaching practices

  15. Teacher training: phase 1 • Face-to-face, hands-on, learning about machines and becoming confident users • Creating and filing documents • Emailing and attaching documents • Accessing a CD ROM • Using a web browser

Teacher training: phase 2 • Use of the Internet: email and World Wide Web • To prepare teachers to become part of supportive online learning communities in their clusters • To prepare teachers for the online delivery of curriculum, learning support materials and resources • To enable teachers to access information and create their own materials independently

Training for EMDC officials • To ensure computer literacy where necessary • To enable cluster managers to administer, mentor and support their clusters online • To enable them to create supportive online learning communities • To prepare them for the online delivery of curriculum, learning support materials and resources

  18. How far have we come? • Discussions have begun with Khanya and possible service providers • A database for the curriculum materials has been designed • Arrangements for the creation of the website have been made • Funding for specialist Internet training has been secured
