Hitler’s policies and principles • Hitler entered politics to restart the Great War on terms Germany could win • Once in power he • Consolidated his dictatorship • Abolished other political parties, trade unions and independent associations (Gleichgeschaltung) • Press censorship • Concentration camps and secret police • Entire society propagandized • Got the economy going again • Rebuilt the military

What kind of rearmament • Blitzkrieg - “lightening war” • War would be fast, relatively cheap, not exact too great a price on German people • Concentration of armor • Armored divisions with motorized infantry • Most French and British armor was spread out into regular infantry divisions • Concentration on weak part of enemy force • Encircle and cut off enemy (bullet-in-brain) • Use of air power as mobile artillery, weapon of terror

  5. Appeasement • Hitler was abetted in his rearmament by the British and French • Appeasement - giving in to Hitler’s legitimate demands • Remilitarization • Anschluß of Austria • The Munich Conference in October 1938 gave Hitler the Sudetenland Neville Chamberlain

  6. Hitlerian “racial science” • Different “races” -ethnic groups - have different essential characteristics. • A persons characteristics are determined by their “blood” - DNA. • The “strength” of a race depends upon the “purity” of their blood.

Preparing for race war • Initial period of ad hoc measures (1933-1935) • April 1, 1933 - boycott of Jewish businesses • April 7, 1933 – Jews expelled from civil service • Oct 4, 1933 – Jews excluded from press • May 5, 1934 – Jews excluded from medical school exams • July 22, 1934 – Jews excluded from law school exams • May 21, 1935 – Jews excluded from military service • Very unpopular overseas, many Germans reluctant to take part
