  2. ATMOSPHERE: overall feeling of a work, related to tone and mood CONCRETE POEM: a poem with a shape that suggests its subject END RHYME:rhyming words that are at the end of the line

  3. MOOD: the feeling created in the reader by a literary work PERSONIFICATION: giving something that is not human, human-like characteristics -Example: The tree waved excitedly in the wind.

  4. REPETITION: To use, more than one, of any element of language RHYME: Repetition of sounds at the end of words • Example: Roses are red, violets are blue….. RHYME SCHEME: a specific pattern of rhyming words and syllables

  5. STANZA:a formal division of lines in a poem considered as a unit SYMBOLISM: the use of one thing to represent another -Example: A dove is a symbol for peace. THEME: the central idea of a work

  6. TONE: author’s attitude toward the subject of the work; usually positive or negative -Example: The tone of a piece of literature could be pessimistic, optimistic, angry or sarcastic. VOICE: the author’s presence in a work or literature
