  1. Deep in the Forest Words and Pictures by: E.B. W.H., D.H., and Mrs. Gunnell

  2. Hairy Bear sees a wooden house in the forest. Hairy crawls and sneaks toward the log cabin. Hairy is a clever and curious bear. What Hairy doesn’t know, is that a daddy named Buck, a mommy named Linda, and a little girl named Golden Girl have left their home to take a walk in the woods. They will be back soon to eat their oatmeal that is cooling on the table.

  3. Hairy Bear looks inside the house. He sees the kitchen. He sees the bedroom. Hairy Bear sees three of bowls of oatmeal. He climbs up onto the table. He tries the daddy’s oatmeal in the first bowl. It is too hot and burns Hairy Bear’s mouth. Hairy goes to the second bowl. That oatmeal is too cold to eat. Hairy tries the last bowl of oatmeal, and it is just right, so Hairy Bear gobbles Golden Girl’s food all up! Then, Hairy Bear jumps down from the table and he spills all the milk!

  4. Next, Hairy Bear sees three chairs. Hairy Bear gets in the daddy’s chair. It is too big. Hairy Bear gets in the mommy’s chair. It is too big. Hairy goes to the last chair. It is small. It is just right. When Hairy sits in the chair, he breaks it!

  5. Next, Hairy Bear looks in the bedroom. He finds three beds. First, he gets in the daddy’s bed. It is too boingy. Next, he gets in the momma’s bed. He doesn’t like it and tears it all up. Last, he gets to Golden Girl’s bed. It is the perfect bed! He jumps onto Golden Girl’s bed and slips under the covers.

  6. Meanwhile, Buck, Linda, and Golden Girl come home from their walk in the woods.

  7. They see a big mess and wonder what happened. Buck and Linda look in their cereal bowls. They see a paw print in their oatmeal!

  8. Buck says, “Somebody’s been eating my oatmeal.” Linda says, “Somebody’s been eating my oatmeal too.” Next, Golden Girl looks in her bowl. It is broken and empty! She says, “Somebody’s been eating my oatmeal and it is ALL GONE!”

  9. Next, Buck and Linda look at their chairs. Buck says, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair.” Linda says, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair.” Then Golden Girl says, “Somebody’s been sitting in my chair and they broke it.” Next, Buck, Linda, and Golden Girl go into the bedroom. They look in the beds. Buck says, “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed.” Linda says, “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed.” All of a sudden, Hairy Bear peeks out from Golden Girl’s covers in her bed. Golden Girl says, “Somebody’s been sleeping in my bed and there he is!”

  10. Hairy Bear jumps from the bed and takes off running. Buck tries to catch Hairy Bear to open the door and throw him out. Linda tries to sweep him out. Golden Girl is scared, but runs behind them. They follow Hairy Bear outside, but they cannot find him.

  11. Nevertheless, they are happy because the bear is out of their house.

  12. Finally, Hairy Bear runs home to his family. Hairy Bear’s mother and two brothers are very happy to see him. They give him kisses. Momma Bear gives him a ride on her back.

  13. The people are happy. The bear family is happy. Everyone lives happily ever after. The End
