  1. Eddy fluxes in an idealized basin with surface buoyancy loss Ole Anders Nøst, Vigdis Tverberg and Signe Aaboe Norsk Polarinstitutt

  2. The wind stress curl (NCAR/NCEP) and bottom geostrophic currents.

  3. A view from the side showing the balance between surface and bottom frictional layers How can the upward vertical velocity be consistent with an overturning circulation with sinking in the Nordic Seas? w

  4. Numerical experiments

  5. Equations Eddy fluxes ???

  6. Eddy flux is mainly directed along isopycnals.

  7. Eddy fluxes directed along isopycnals must be an advection and not a diffusion of buoyancy. Diffusion term??

  8. The diffusion term is mainly a vertical redistribution of the surface buoyancy loss.

  9. Integrating over the mixed layer gives: In the model v_res can be found from Where h is the thickness between two isopycnals.

  10. Mean (eulerian) stream function

  11. Residual stream function

  12. Numerical experiments forced by a wind stress in addition to the buoyancy loss.

  13. Mean (eulerian) stream function

  14. Residual (lagrangian) stream function

  15. Conclusion • The f/H model of Nøst and Isachen (2003) is an eulerian description of the system. The vertical velocity is upwards and seems not to be consistent with a net sinking in the Nordic Seas. • By looking at the residual (lagrange) velocities the overturning has the opposite sign and is consistent with sinking.
