  1. STANDARD FORM OF A LINEAR EQUATION Day 2 SECTION 5.5b

  2. Standard Form: DON’T FORGET! Slope-intercept Form:

  3. We are sometimes given information such as slope and a point, or maybe two points, and then ask to write the equation in Standard Form. We cannot always go straight to standard form. Follow these steps to write an equation when given slope & point or two points. • Write the equation in slope-intercept form. ___________________ (if there are any) 2. Remove any fractions or decimals. 3. Rearrange the terms so that it is written in standardform. __________________

  4. Example 1: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. A.

  5. Example 1: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. A. Some books or tests will not list the x-term as negative. Change the sign of ALL terms. Standard Form

  6. Example 1: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. B.

  7. Example 1: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. B. Get rid of the fractions!

  8. Example 1: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. B. Standard Form

  9. Example 2: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. A. Pick EITHER point for x and y. Change the sign of ALL terms. Standard Form

  10. Example 2: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. B. Pick EITHER point for x and y. Get rid of the fractions!

  11. Example 2: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. B. Change the sign of ALL terms. Standard Form

  12. There is a third form for linear equations that is sometimes used. If you know the slope and one point you can write the equation in _________________________. point-slope form point (2,5) point slope Slope =

  13. Example 3: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. A. Change the sign of ALL terms. Standard Form

  14. Example 3: Write an equation in standard form that has the given slope and contains the given point. B. Do not multiply INSIDE the parenthesis! 2 2 2 Standard Form

  15. Example 4: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. A. Pick EITHER point for x and y.

  16. Example 4: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. A. Change the sign of ALL terms. Standard Form

  17. Example 4: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. B. Pick EITHER point for x and y. Get rid of the fractions!

  18. Example 4: Write an equation in standard form that contains the two points. B. 5 5 5 Change the sign of ALL terms. Standard Form
