  4. What is Employability? • Employability covers all the things that enable people to increase their chances of getting a job, staying in work and progressing further in their job. The Scottish Government definition is 'the combination of factors and processes which enable people to progress towards employment, to stay in employment and to move on in the workplace'. http://www.employabilityinscotland.com/glossary#Employability

Tight timescale Various referring agencies: BRC, SRC, Blue Triangle, GRA, SDS, Integration Networks, CoGC Group assessments Predominantly new learners Gauged demand and confirmed levels Courses delivered April – July 2012 WEA 2 lower level courses; GESOL 2 higher level Courses ranged from SCQF levels 2 to 4 Organisation and Delivery

Key topics • Personal Information • Talking about time e.g. appointments with Jobcentre plus • Job information e.g. salary, hours • Applying for a job e.g. calling for an application pack, completing application forms • CV writing • Interviews – preparation, competency questions • Local context – working in Glasgow, major local employers

  11. What did learners find most useful? • Interview role plays • Help with writing CVs and application forms • Using the phone to call about jobs • Presentation skills

  14. Feedback • Of the learners who completed the end of course feedback: • 94% felt their reading and writing skills had improved • 89% felt the class had helped them with their personal life • 94% felt the learning had improved their confidence

  15. The majority of learners said they felt the course was not long enough and that they would like to continue with the classes • The majority of learners said they felt the course had helped them with looking for work

What else have we learned? • More hours required • Access to I.T. & Internet facilities • Don’t reinvent the wheel • Better links into progression routes (volunteering options, College info etc) • Involve other agencies e.g. taster sessions, short input sessions etc • Closer links needed with JCP and advisors 21
