  2. Richard the Lionheart: King of England • Saw Saladin as an exciting enemy • Defeated Cyprus on way, used $ from to fund crusade • Tried 4 times to take Jerusalem • Treaty with Saladin • Captured by Austrians • Died of infected stab wound on way home

  3. Barbarossa, King of Germany • First to join up • Marched through Hungary and Byzantium • Never reached Holy Land • Fell of horse and drowned in his armor • Most of Germans returned home

  4. Phillip II of France • One Eyed • Joined up w.Rich in Italy • Mainly had to go so England wouldn’t‘ conquer France while he was gone. • Unable to defeat Saladin, left for France

  5. Meanwhile back in England • King only in country for less than 6 months! • Taxed to pay for the 3rd Crusade • Taxed by the queen mother to pay for Richard’s ransom • Taxed to pay for Richard’s war against France the moment he was freed. • Bankrupted by war and ransom • Had Richard’s horrible brother take over…

  6. The Bad King John • Killed his nephew to steal the throne • Took a 12 year old wife • Got excommunicated • Locked up women and children who protested his actions • Raised taxes (again) to go to war in France • Made enemies of nobles w/punishments and taxes

  7. The Magna Carta • 1215: war in France going badly • BKJ asked for more taxes…again • Nobles met him by the river Thames • Made a deal: taxes for rights • Justice, Taxation w/consent only, Jury Trial • For the first time, the King was also subject to the law!

  8. The First Parliament • 1300: • Taxed again for more war in France • Nobles flipped out • Captured the king and ruled in his name for over a year • Assembled nobles, clergy, knights, and reps from each town = first form of democracy since Rome where everyone gets a say in government
