  7. -yellow fever, malaria -44,000 workers -frequent accidents, deaths, and lost equipment -August 1914- S.S. Ancon becomes the first ship to officially pass through the canal Panama Canal construction

  8. -Monroe Doctrine- idle threat -Roosevelt Corollary- amendment to the Monroe Doctrine -created more stability in Latin America; kept European powers out -also made some Latin America countries feeling uneasy Roosevelt corollary

  9. -U.S. influence in Latin America became stronger -dollar diplomacy -suggested Americans buy out Latin American loans -caused resentment in Latin America Taft’s “dollar diplomacy”
