Borders and Geography • The borders of Pennsylvania are; Lake Erie, New York, Maryland, West Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio and Delaware. • Geography: One Piedmont Plateau, 60% of Plateau's, mountains, hills are covered in trees. 1,000 square miles of natural manmade lakes, ponds, rivers, streams.

  7. Agriculture and farming • Our state is not good for farming. Mountains and hills cover all but two small areas.

History • Statehood: December 12,1787, the second state. • Historical fact 1: 1643, Swedish settlers established a capital on Tinicum Island n ear present day Philadelphia. • Historical fact 2: 1776, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in the Pennsylvania state house [now Independence Hall] in Pennsylvania. • Historical fact 3: 1863, was the turning point in the Civil War. After three days of fighting confederate forces by General Robert E. Lee retreated to Virginia.

Colleges/Universities and Places to Visit • Haverford College, Haverford PA • Albright College, Reading PA • Fallingwater, near Uniontown, is one of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s most acclaimed work. Which was completed in the 1930’s was built over a natural waterfall. • National forest in Allegany. Allegany national forest is in northwestern Pennsylvania. It covers 500,000 acres of land.

  10. Additional facts • Ice cream soda was invented in 1874 in Philadelphia. Robert M. Green created Ice Cream Sodas. Green made it by using sweet cream, syrup, and carbonated water. Profits from $6 to 600 dollars per day. Created at Franklin institute. • The worlds largest Chocolate and Confectionary factory's in Hershey, The Hershey plant. The factory covers over two million square feet. Was established in 1905. • The first magazine in American Colonies was published by Andrew Bradford of Philadelphia. The American magazine, or a monthly view of the British settlers appeared February 13,1741. The magazine lased 3 months. • Downtown Pittsburg lies between the Allegany and Monongahela rivers. Pittsburg is the states second largest city. • The state flag was adopted in 1907. • The highest temperature Pennsylvania has reached is 111 degrees F on July 10, 1936.
