  1. Agenda: Strategic plan Essentials Electronic Data Capture for research studies EDC's, databases and survey tools as central offerings. Database hosting Adding value New grant opportunities: 12/28 RC4 RFP Jan ‘10MGH Advisory Board

  2. The Next 3 Year Research IT Strategic plan Objective Take into consideration the variety of needs within the research community Positions Partners to support continued excellence in Research Anticipate the unique computing requirement to fully support genetics research Create a high level three-year funding request and roadmap Scope Infrastructure Clinical Research Research Genetics IT integration Personalized Medicine clinical integration Pharmacovigilence & Comparative effectiveness Approach Interview key members of the research community Create working group Select key individuals to provide input

  3. Prior 3 year plan: FY07-09 Governance • Establish overall Research IT steering committee • Establish Research Administrative steering committee Administrative Systems • Begin to retire ReX and implement vendor Grants and Contract module • Implement PeopleSoft Research A/R billing module • Develop and implement eIRB Infrastructure • Develop affordable fee-for-service data storage options • Provide data center space for departmental infrastructure • Develop expanded team to provide non-standard and open source support Clinical Research • Develop a central repository for biological samples linked to the RPDR • Integrate genetic results into the RPDR • Expanded support for clinical studies (EDC/CTMS) • Completed or made significant progress. • Ongoing efforts • No progress

  4. Infrastructure Major themes from interviews Continue current core services while keeping pace with growth Storage, analytical computing, cloud computing, desktop applications Expanded data center space with optional support Need for expanded “fee-for-service” consulting support IT engineering, database driven applications, cloud, HPC, etc. Provide research-driven guidance and dedicated support Data/systems security Scientific software licensing/hosting

  5. Infrastructure – Roadmap and Budget 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Total 3 year capital $7.5M

  6. Clinical Research Major themes from interviews • Need for support of tools for clinical research studies • EDC – Electronic data capture applications for small to medium studies • Need for easy to use survey tools that provides proper security • No system exist for end-to-end management of clinical trials • CTMS – Clinical Trials Management systems • RPDR enhancements • Need expanded support to recruit patients for clinical trials from the RPDR • Integration of Research study data (EDC) and RPDR data into i2b2 data marts • Need to be able to create patient control sets from the RPDR • Need to integrate images from clinical PACS • Need for expanded support of Genetic studies • Expanded IT and analytical support for phenotypic data • Need for integration of genetic data into project specific data marts

  7. Clinical Research – Roadmap and Budget 1 1 1 1 Total 3 year capital $500K

  8. EDC’s and Surveys • New Hire: Lynn Simpson • Catalyst-sponsored • Offer: REDCap and REDCap Survey. • Host StudyTrax • IRB guidance in external requests • Evaluating other hosted solutions • DatStat, LimeSurvey • Discussion: How to help the new investigator

  9. DIPR Utilization Spans Enterprise initiatives, Core Facilities, Depts, Small Investigator Projects • Hosted Databases • 7 PostgreSQL • 28 MySQL • 96 Oracle • 72 Hosted VM’s • 350 TB utilized

  10. Databases • Open Source hosted schemas • PostGres, MySQL • Standalone • In DIPR cloud/centrally hosted • New: Oracle hosted schemas • 10/11 g instances • RAC—cluster, plenty of capacity • Discussion: • Centrally managed public/private repositories?

  11. Response to Infrastructure Grants High-Performance Biomedical Computing Scott Weiss, PI $2.6M HPC cluster + storage 261 Partners grant-funded projects identified within 48 hours by 154 investigators Priority score: 30 C06 – Data center facility for PHS research Gary Gottlieb, PI $10M facility improvement program 31 letters of support from center directors, div chiefs. 368 grant-funded projects identified which receive $144M annually in funding. Priority score received: 10

  12. RFA-OD-10-005: NIH Director’s Opportunity for Research in Five Thematic Areas (RC4) • multi-year, with high impact ideas • lay the foundation for new fields of investigation; accelerate breakthroughs; stimulate early and applied research on cutting-edge technologies; foster new approaches to improve the interactions among multi- and interdisciplinary research teams • or, advance the research enterprise in a way that could stimulate future growth and investments and advance public health and health care delivery. • Support either a specific research question or propose the creation of a unique infrastructure/resource designed to accelerate scientific progress in the future.

  13. 5 Thematic areas: Deadline 3/15 • Applying Genomics and Other High Throughput Technologies • Translating Basic Science Discoveries into New and Better Treatments • Using Science to Enable Health Care Reform • Focusing on Global Health • Reinvigorating the Biomedical Research Community
