  2. What is it? Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. Melanoma starts from a pigment-producing cell called melanocytes. Usually, melanoma starts in apresent mole. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/images/ency/fullsize/1707.jpg

  3. Layers of the Skin Melanoma grows deep into the dermis (middle layer of the skin). Melanoma then invades lymph nodes and blood vessels causing the melanoma to spread through out the body. http://www.mmmp.org/MMMP/import.mmmp?page=pathology.mmmp

  4. Signs and Symptoms • Melanoma can be located anywhere on the body • Larger than 6 mm • Round or irregular shaped • Irregular color (blue, purple, dark brown, black) • Ulceration or bleeding • Itching and stinging

  5. Causes • Increasing age • Sun damaged skin • Diagnosed with melanoma in the past • Fair skin that burns easily in the sun • Melanoma can be hereditary

  6. Cure Surgery is necessary to remove the tumor (preferably in the earlier stages of melanoma). Then, additional surgery may be necessary to evaluate if the melanoma spread to neighboring lymph nodes or blood vessels. After, the doctor may decide if chemotherapy is necessary. www.e-ijd.org

  7. Worst Case Scenario If desmoplatic melanoma goes untreated, the melanocytes will spread through out lymph nodes and blood vessels. Eventually, these cancerous cells will reach the brain and other vital organs. The cells will begin to take over the patients body.
