Data & Methods Purpose-Determine whether students had different perceptions of careers in nursing, medicine, teaching, physical therapy. • Surveys given to 3,253 Pre-Nursing and Nursing college students in science and math courses. • 8 Community Colleges & 4 State Universities in California Central Valley. • Mixed Urban and Rural Regions. • Students were to rate the attributes of four careers which included: Physical Therapist, Registered Nurse, High School Teacher, and Physician.

  4. Data & Methods Cont’d • An ANOVA and Chi Square test analyses were applied. • A Likert Types scale used when rating occupation characteristics by a response of “definitely applies”, ”somewhat applies”, “does not apply”.

  5. Results • Respondents were an average age of twenty five years. • 47.2 indicated they were nursing students. • 48% White, 27% Latino, 21% Asian, 6% African-American, and 2% other. • Rating Order regarding Independence Physician-1 Nurses-2 Physical Therapists-3 High School Teachers-4 • Low proportion of nurses work independently. • Nurses have more flexible hours than Physicians. • Nurses and Physicians were rated high risk professions. • Women were viewed better suited for nursing. • Nursing viewed high in risk for injury & pressure. • High school teachers rated lowest in most categories.

My Journal Reflection Strengths • Diverse study participants. • Large sample of subjects. • User friendly survey, but no mention of the number of items. • Job Content Questionnaire instrument. • Current issue regarding nursing students. Weaknesses • Majority nursing majors studied. • Cannot generalize results since CA only and not a state w/ competitive admissions. • Since majority of sample nursing majors, they would only rate the nursing career favorably. • More issues to consider regarding the “negative image”. • Include more research.
