Thresholds for Anabolic Steroids, TCO2 Testing, Ethyl-Glucuronide (2009 Winter NHBPA Meeting Hollywood, Florida)

This article discusses the history and regulation of TCO2 testing, the establishment of plasma thresholds for anabolic steroids, and the detection of ethanol/alcohol in equine blood samples. It also acknowledges the support of various organizations and individuals.

  1. THRESHOLDS FOR 1/ ANABOLIC STEROIDS 2/ TCO2 TESTING 3/ ETHYL-GLUCURONIDE 2009 WINTER NHBPA MEETING HOLLYWOOD FLORIDA: Thomas Tobin Gluck Equine Research Center University of Kentucky Saturday, January 31, 2009

  2. SUMMARY TODAY WE MAY SEE A LITTLE HISTORY MADE 1/ Dr. MAYLIN IS GOING TO PRESENT A TECHNICAL ADVANCE IN TCO2 REGULATION 2/ Dr. SAMS WILL PRESENT AN OVERVIEW OF THE PLASMA THRESHOLD STUDIES FOR ANABOLIC STEROIDS 3/ AND WE MAY HAVE A NEW ENVIRONMENTAL SUBSTANCE: ETHANOL

  3. BACKGROUND: TCO2 TESTING FIRST REFERENCE TO BICARBONATE LOADING IN EQUINES THAT I AM AWARE OF IS IN MY BOOK “DRUGS AND THE PERFORMANCE HORSE”, WAY BACK IN 1981. I NOTED THAT ADMINISTRATION OF BICARBONATE WAS CONSIDERED LIKELY TO POSITIVELY INFLUENCE PERFORMANCE IN ENDURANCE EVENTS CONSIDERED TO ACT BY AMELIORATING THE METABOLIC ACIDOSIS ASSOCIATED WITH ENDURANCE EVENTS

  4. REGULATION OF TCO2 1987: AUSTRALIA; RUMORS OF A WHITE ”MILKSHAKE” SUBSTANCE BEING USED IN RACING HORSES 1988: SUBSTANCE BICARBONATE 1991: UNIV. OF SYDNEY INVESTIGATES ITS USE CONTROL MECHANISMS EVALUATED: BECKMAN SYNCHRON EL-ISE MEASURING TOTAL TCO2 BECOMES THE TEST INSTRUMENT OF CHOICE

  5. REGULATION OF TCO2 BECKMAN SYNCHRON EL-ISE INSTRUMENT IS BEING DISCONTINUED PROFESSOR MAYLIN IS GOING TO SPEAK TO THE VALIDATION OF A REPLACEMENT INSTRUMENT, THE BIOANALYTICA NOVA4 THAT HE HAS BEEN WORKING ON WITH MR. PHIL LORIMER OF THE NEW JERSEY STATE POLICE LABORATORY.

  6. ANABOLIC STEROIDS ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO THE NATIONAL HBPA THREW ITS SUPPPORT BEHIND A PROGRAM TO ESTABLISH DEFINED REGULATORY THRESHOLDS FOR THERAPEUTIC MEDICATIONS TODAY PROFESSOR SAMS IS I BELIEVE, GOING TO SPEAK TO THE DATA FOR REGULATORY THRESHOLDS FOR FOUR ANABOLIC STEROIDS TESTOSTERONE, NANDROLONE, BOLDENONE AND STANOZOLOL

  7. ANABOLIC STEROIDS THESE THRESHOLDS ARE BEING ESTABLISED IN PLASMA THE DATA BASE IS BEING DEVELOPED IN A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF HORSES, 20 HORSES IN EACH GROUP MORE OR LESS AND WE BELIEVE THAT OUT OF THESE STUDIES WILL COME RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NATIONAL PLASMA THRESHOLDS FOR THESE FOUR ANABOLIC STEROIDS AND ASSOCAITED WITHDRAWAL TIME GUIDELINES

  8. ETHANOL/ALCOHOL WE ALL KNOW THAT ETHANOL CLEARS THE BLOOD RELATIVELY RAPIDLY YOU CAN GO HOMME AND “SLEEP IT OFF” AND UNLESS YOUR ARE A VERY HEAVY DRINKER, YOU WILL LIKELY BE BELOW THE LEGAL LIMIT THE NEXT MORNING

  9. ETHANOL/ALCOHOL WELL, THAT IS ALL CHANGED THE TECHNOLOGY THAT ALLOWS DR. SAMS TO PICK UP PICOGRAMS OF STANOZOLOL IN EQUINE BLOOD SAMPLES ALSO ALLOWS HIM TO PICK UP ETHANOL GLUCURONIDE IN HUMAN URINE FOR UP TO 5 DAYS AFTER YOU HAVE HAD A DRINK EVEN THOUGH, IN LAY TERMS THE ALCOHOL IS LONG GONE

  10. ETHANOL/ALCOHOL WE NOW HAVE AN ETNANOL GLUCURONIDE POSITIVE IN ARIZONA MAY BE ASSOICATED WITH APPLICATION OFA LONG STANDING LEG WRAP PROCEDURE INVOLVING LISTERINE.

  11. ETHANOL/ALCOHOL TWO POSSIBLE OUTCOMES: FIRST, I BELIEWVE IT IS NOW APPROPRIATE TO ADD ETHANOL TO THE LIST OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUBSTANCES IN EQUINES SECOND, WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF POSSIBLE SOURCES OF INADVERTENT EXPOSURE TO ALCOHOL

  12. PUBLICATION Policy now a large document; 108 typewritten pages The 2003 edition was published as virtually a complete edition of the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science We have just submitted the 2008 edition for publication in this journal. Turns out that the Journal editor, Dr. Ed Squires of Colorado, is our new Associate Director in the Equine Center, his office is next to mine, and I am hopeful that the size of this document will not be a problem

  13. THANKS TO 1/ National HBPA and Mr. Joe Santanna, President 2/ Florida HBPA, Mr. Sam Gordon, President 3/ Kentucky HBPA, Mr. Rick Hiles, President 4/ Canada HBPA, Mr. Mel Snow, President. 5/ Nebraska HBPA, Mr. Jerry Fudge, President 6/ Ontario HBPA Ms. Sue Leslie, President 7/ Indiana HBPA, Mr. Randy Klopp, President 8/ Charles Town HBPA Mr. Randy Funkhouser, President 9/ Ohio HBPA Mr. Jim Yaegel, President 10 Arkansas HBPA, Dr. Earl Bellamy, President 11/ Michigan HBPA, Mr. Rick McCune, President 12/ Pennsylvania HBPA, Mr. Joe Santanna, President 13/ Alabama HBPA, Mr. Skip Drinkard, President 14/ Arizona HBPA, Mr. Michael Napier, President 15/ Louisiana HBPA, Mr. Sean Alfortish, President
