  1. Case based learning Novel teaching methodology in heath sciences

  2. What is CBL? • Student teaching method that uses problems as the initial starting point for acquisition and integration of new knowledge (Barrows, 1982) • Tell me ….. And I forget • Teach me….. And I remember • Involve me….. And I learn

  3. Active Learning Goals To integrate the previous years of health science using cases that involve science as well as social science. To develop lifelong learning skills and problem solving skills. To develop leadership skills and teamwork skills. To improve communication among HSS students. To develop critical thinking through analysis and reflection. To improve medical, social, psychological, philosophical knowledge.

  4. Program Structure • 1st year: • Students are introduced to health sciences in determinants of health. • Virtual case based learning is used through the central website to complement the courses and introduce students to case based learning

  5. Program Structure • 2nd and 3rd year • The students will get into small groups and are given clinical or social cases and must formulate hypothesis and communicate their ideas .

  6. Program Structure • 4th year • The plan is to develop structured patient/client simulations and significantly improve communication skills and apply the content of health science courses into real life situation. • Work in progress

  7. Facilitators • These students are carefully selected based on marks, extracurricular and teaching activities through group interviews. • These students will then undergo rigorous training and will be monitored during the first 2 sessions for quality assurance. • This training program is much more significant than faculty of medicine’s training program.

  8. Evaluation • Participation (2.5%) Pass/Fail • Quiz (2.5%) Multiple choice This can be modified depending on the professors.

  9. Quiz • Can be made by the professors • It can be modified by the tutors for various sessions to avoid repetition

  10. Facilitator evaluation • Survey at the end (for the evaluation of the program and the Facilitator) • These will be used in the evaluation of the pilot project • Professors can add evaluation criteria and measure a specific component as they wish.
