    3. First Read the title Look at the pictures Read the picture captions Read the article two times 1st time: read to get the whole picture, then read and highlight the questions 2nd time: read to highlight

    4. Main Idea To find the main idea, imagine saying to a friend, Well, basically, this story is about _________. What is the main thing that you want to tell? Supporting details work together with the main idea? Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

    5. Summarizing BME B= Beginning M= Middle E= End Read each answer choice. Label the BME in each choice. BEM ME BE BME

    6. Context Clues Find the underlined word in the passage. Substitute the four answer choices for the underlined word. Which word makes sense? Context clues may appear in the sentences near the word, or they may be spread throughout a paragraph or even appear in another paragraph. Read all around the word! Highlight the sentence before the sentence with the underlined word. Highlight the sentence that the underlined word is in. Highlight the sentence after the underlined word. Use the words you do know as clues to the meaning of a word you dont know. Synonyms Antonyms Explanations Definitions Descriptions

    7. Fact and Opinion A fact is a statement that is not an opinion (what someone thinks feels or believes). An opinion is what someone thinks feels or believes. Teach OPINION words: You may want to make a chart of these words (examples are on the following slides). These words will help identify opinions. Look for the opinion word in each answer choice. If there is no opinion word, the answer choice is a fact.
