  2. COMPASSION • n. concern for another’s distress Many people suffer from mental illness and we as a society must show them compassion and support.

  3. DISILLUSIONED • adj. stripped of hopes, or optimism, disappointed I was disillusioned by the lack of service I received at the restaurant, so I vowed to never eat there again.

  4. SLIPSHOD • adj. untidy in dress, personal habits, etc.; careless, sloppy She understand math very well, but she did poorly on the examination because of slipshod work in computation.

  5. HOARD • V. to keep something to oneself Some people believe that to hoard more money than you need is a sin.

  6. INEPT • adj. lacking in ability or aptitude After two hours of work, it was obvious the plumber we hired to fix the sink was inept because the leak was getting worse, not better.

  7. LURK • v. to lie in wait in a place, creep around The man was suspicious because he was lurking around bushes and fences, trying not be noticed.

  8. PROVOKE • v. to call for a feeling or an action, to rouse Students abuse of cell phones in the classroom provoked the teacher to collect them all at the beginning of class.

  9. TENACIOUS • adj. determined, unyielding, persistent The dog was tenacious in his pursuit of the squirrel, but he was simply out run.

  10. INCITE • v. to rouse, stir up, urge on We learned form the TV film that Spartacus was a Roman gladiator who incited his fellow slaves to armed rebellion.

  11. VIE • v. to strive for superiority or compete with somebody or something The two children would vie for their mother’s attention.
