  1. Bellringer What personal qualities are needed by explorers at any time in history – for example, those who explore outer space and the ocean floors today? Give two qualities and explain their importance.

  2. MEET: Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca LIFE IN THE NEW WORLD… Few adventurers have faced greater odds than the Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. Stranded and defenseless in the vast wilderness of the New World, he had only a slim chance of surviving. His tale of the journey, La Relacion, was the first European account of the interior of what is now the United States.

  3. Some Background… • In the early 1500s, Spanish conquistadores began exploring and invading Central and South America, searching for gold and other riches. In 1534, Francisco Pizarro conquered the Incas in Peru. The indigenous people were baffled and frightened by the sudden appearance of the Spanish. The Spanish had weapons that ensured victory in war: horses, war dogs, guns, cannons, as well as their greatest weapon, smallpox virus. As a result of Spanish occupation, indigenous societies and cultures were in shambles. Indigenous peoples and the Spanish began to intermarry, creating a mixed race.

  4. Summary: from La Relacion After four days at sea, Cabeza de Vaca’s ship is caught in a storm. Many of his men are either unconscious or dead. After the shop run aground on an island, the men encounter Native Americans and are afraid they will be sacrificed. However, the Native Americans are sympathetic and bring them food. The Spaniards once again set sail, only to be shipwrecked a second time. The Native Americans weep for the misfortunes of the sailors, take them to their lodges to get warm, and hold a great celebration.

  5. William Bradford

  6. William Bradford’s from Plymouth Plantation Summary In 1620, a group of Puritans called the Pilgrims to set sail from Holland for Virginia. A storm blows the Mayflower off course , and the ship lands in what is now Massachusetts. A few months after their arrival, nearly half the 100 Pilgrims have died of disease. Some Native Americans befriend the settlers. Squanto becomes an interpreter, guide, and teacher for the Pilgrims, who learn to provide for themselves and celebrate a “First Thanksgiving” after the harvest.

  7. Question • How important is it to you to be able to express your own personal beliefs? • In his narrative, William Bradford tells disturbing stories of the setters’ first winter in New England, a difficult step in the path to religious freedom.

  8. OlaudahEquiano

  9. “The Life of OlaudahEquiano” Summary In this excerpt, OlaudahEquiano recounts his experiences traveling as a kidnapped, enslaved person on a ship from Africa to Barbados in the West Indies.
