What is Palala Clubs? - Founded in 2007 by Peace Corps Volunteer Rachel Johnson (South Africa 2006-2008), and two primary school teachers, Maam Tema and Maam Ditsela, it is a six month after school program for 6th and 7th grade girls to teach gender specific life-skills, HIV/AIDS education, and a weekly activity or craft that the girls may use in the future as an income generating activity.

  3. Our Mission - Is to create a safe environment where young boys and girls can learn valuable life lessons and skills with a focus on the awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

  4. Fundamentals of the program • Local community members are sought out to be Palala Club leaders. They are encouraging, knowledgeable, and dedicated to making a difference in the girls lives. • Meetings take place once a week after school on the school grounds. - Specific program structure is followed, to ensure that both leaders and the girls have something reliable and stable in their lives.

  5. History of Palala Clubs • Palala Girls Club (PGC) • Started in 2007 at Klipspruit Primary School, in Kgobagodimo village, by PCV Rachel Johnson, Maam Tema, and Maam Ditsela. Funded by a VAST grant (funded through PEPFAR). • Palala East Girls Club (PEGC) • In 2008, the program was expanded to include 4 schools: Kopanong Primary School (host school), Letlamoreng Primary School, Kgomo-Mokgalo Primary School, and Segale Primary School. Funded by a VAST grant.

  6. History of Palala Clubs Continued.. • Palala Boys Club (PBC) • Started in 2008 at Klipspruit Primary School by PCV Brandon Johnson, Mr. Dibetso, Mr. Kgomo, and Mr. Matsa. Funded by a VAST grant. • Palala North Girls Club (PNGC) • Started in 2008 at Ga-Seleka Primary School, in Ga-Seleka village by PCV Jessica Vig, Maam Senoamadi, Maam Motebele, Maam Motshegwa, Maam Makhura, Maam Seleka, and Maam Masenya (six primary school teachers). Funded by a VAST grant.

  7. Palala Clubs Apron Project - Recognizing the need to become self-sustaining, the apron project was founded in June 2008. Palala Clubs started sewing and selling aprons, using traditional South African fabrics. Each apron is distributed in a matching bag, and is being sold for R100. Profits from the aprons sales are given back to the leader who sewed the apron, and Palala Clubs. The initial start up materials were purchased

  8. Palala Clubs Apron Project Continued… through donations and club fundraising. The project has now received funding through VAST. • Since the project’s inception, we have sold over 300+ aprons. • Aprons have been sold at the United States Embassy Craft Fair, Peace Corps Trainings, online through our website, and within the villages we work.

  11. ICT and Palala Clubs Continued… - DVD • Has been given out at Peace Corps trainings in the event that a PCV would like to replicate the project within their own village, township, or city. Included on the DVD is all of the Palala Clubs curriculum, weekly handouts, craft instructions, model for membership cards, attendance charts, craft completion charts and the end of the year slideshow. All of the above materials are also located online on our website at www.palalaclubs.com.

Goals of Palala Clubs for 2009 and Onward • Clubs • Complete the 2nd year of PNGC • Leaders fully training on how to do financing, turning over all weekly club details. • Support PGC in their 3rd year • Assisting in purchasing and transporting materials, finding feasible ways of getting materials to village after Peace Corps Volunteers are gone. • Apron project • Finding a reliable wholesaler who can ship materials to Northern Limpopo.

  15. Goals of Palala Clubs for 2009 and Onward • Explore potential retail outlets for aprons in South Africa and the US. Finalize arrangements for distribution and shipping. • Turn over all accounting and financing of project to leaders. • Relationship building • Facilitating a relationship between the Palala Clubs leaders and all of our vendors, suppliers, etc.
