  1. ETHICS • A group of moral principles, standards of behavior, or set of values regarding proper conduct Thesaurus: Principles, morals, beliefs

  2. ETHICS If You’re Unsure - Before You Act – ASK yourself the following: • Is this legal? • Is it against company policy? • Could the action cause loss or harm to anyone? • If everyone I knew saw me, would I feel uncomfortable?

  3. Think What are some things you make ethical decisions about? How sure are you of those decisions? Lets watch: Summary of ethics What should have happened? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWWAV8RorF0&feature=watch_response http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XDP1HD7fc4&feature=fvsr Think again, what are some things you make ethical decision about?

  4. What decisions about right and wrong do you make? • Cheating • Downloading music / movies • Telling on your friends • Lying to teachers / friends / parents • How hard you actually work • Speeding • Others?

  5. Why have a Code of Ethics? • To define accepted/acceptable behaviors • To promote high standards of practice • To provide a benchmark for members to use for self evaluation • To establish a framework for professional behavior and responsibilities • As a vehicle for occupational identity • As a mark of occupational maturity

  6. My Code: Mission Statement Life is too short to worry about the little things! By being a teacher I choose to be in the public eye and to be a positive role model. Though I am far from perfect, I will strive to live my life well to the fullest with no regrets. I will strive to treat each person I come across with respect and dignity regardless of how they may view or treat me.

  7. I, (P. Kato), will use the following Code of Ethics as a guide to good choices: • I will be honest • I will base my thoughts and actions on my religious belief • I will not carry anger from one person / group to another • I will not worry about the small stuff • I will be fair and unbiased in my grading • I will be honest with all my students regardless of consequences • I will give everyone a fair chance and will give them an optimistic second chance • I will not judge on superficial items • I will strive to leave all the places I go to a better place

  8. How I will do it • I will smile everyday • I will not look at names whenever possible when I am grading • I will respect and talk with my students and colleagues • I will not whine and complain when things don’t go my way • I will remember that appearances do not say who the person is and that high school is a time of growth and change where a person is not the same one day to the next • I will find something to laugh at every hour and go home to my family realizing I am lucky to have them, and my life.

  9. What you will do – Write your own code • Get to know yourself • Ask others to give a fair analysis of you • Create a pro / con list of yourself • What would you like to change about yourself? • Develop an ethics mission statement • Develop a list of values • Explain how you will accomplish / stick to your values • Create penalties or actions for failing

  10. Things to think of when writing your code • A code of ethics should be tailored to the needs and values of your organization / you. • Red Cross • FedEx • Microsoft • Many ethics codes have two parts • Inspirational: outlines ideals it hopes to live up to • Rules or principles: everyday steps to follow • Often have Enforcement: way to keeping one accountable • The ordering does not matter, but first listed usually are more important • How / when will your code be reviewed / revised?
