  2. Handling Hazardous Materials • Hazards in the workplace • Employees in the Healthcare profession are exposed to potential hazards on a daily basis. • These risks may include: • Hazardous Chemicals/Drugs • Infectious Waste • Needlesticks

Handling Hazardous Materials • Key points in dealing with spills • Should a spill occur: • Know what chemical(s) have been spilled • Obtain the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) • Call the laboratory, they are the response leaders • Call Security, indicating the location and type of spill • Take preliminary control measures as indicated by the MSDS • Evacuate the area • If you are overcome by fumes, or get any chemicals on your skin or clothing, seek medical treatment

  4. Handling Hazardous Materials Chemical spills • Spills can be avoided by: • Proper storage • Good transportation practices • Using proper techniques • Your part: • Review MSDS • Use only the correct equipment needed for cleaning up spills • Notify proper personnel of the spill

  5. Handling Hazardous Materials In the event of a chemical spill: Condition “Yellow” is announced through the overhead paging system

Handling Hazardous Materials • Healthcare waste • Disposing and transporting of waste: • Dispose of waste in appropriate/designated container. • Transport the following in rigid containers: • Radioactive waste • Hazardous waste • Medical waste (biohazards, sharps) • Pharmaceutical waste • Medical solid waste

  7. Handling Hazardous Materials • Sharps • All sharps should be properly disposed of. The sharps container will be labeled as hazard material and have the hospital’s address on the container. Sharps include: sharp disposable items contaminated with body fluids/blood. Examples: • Glass • Needles • Syringes • Vials • Blades

  8. Handling Hazardous Materials • Oxygen Cylinder Safety • Transport in approved holders only. • Store in approved holders only.

  9. Handling Hazardous Materials • Radiation safety • The radiation warning symbol is 3 blades trefoil symbol - magenta on yellow.

Handling Hazardous Materials • Radiation safety • Your part: • When you encounter a room posted with the radiation caution sign, check with the person in charge before entering the room. • When a portable x-ray is taken, stand at least 6 feet behind the portable x-ray machine. If you cannot move away from an x-ray machine when an exposure is to be made, put on a leaded apron.

Handling Hazardous Materials • Radiation • Radiation (ionizing radiation) cannot be avoided because natural sources are everywhere. • For radiation safety, practice the following: • Time - decrease time spent near radiation source • Distance - step away from the source • Shielding - use lead apron and safety glasses
