1. January Identity Narrative Page:Symbolism A symbol is something concrete that stands for something abstract. For example, the American flag stands for patriotism, and a rose represents love. It can be an object, character, or an action. • Decide on two characteristics or attributes that you have that are abstract qualities. • Create a symbol to represent these characteristics about you; this symbol may be unoriginal (already exists) or original (something that you create). • Write a descriptive, thorough and clear response that explains your symbol and the qualities that it represents.

2. Written Section and Visual • Include the following in your written section: • An explanation and definitions of the qualities/characteristics you have chosen • Explain how and why they are important/significant to you • Describe and explain all aspects of your symbol • Colors, features, size, specific details, and if it is unoriginal or original in its design • Visual: • Create a unique symbol. Draw or design your symbol. Be creative! • Remember the symbol can be original (something you create) or unoriginal (something that already exists that you re-design)

3. Your Identity Narrative Page must include: • One 8.5x11 piece of cardstock. • 2. VISUAL - Symbol • 3. WRITING– Typed and attached to the base page. • ***most important part – be detailed and specific!! • 4. Border– create a border for your page – all the way around or down one side. • 5. Title – give your page an original and creative title • 6. Name– your name as the author must be on the front of the page DUE DATE: Tuesday 2/4/14 *These will be shared in class.

4. Writer’s Notebook: pre-writing • Choose two of the characteristics from your warm-up. • What symbols could you use? Remember to think about creative ways to express different things about you – color, shape, size, design, unoriginal symbols that already have meaning?????? • Rough Draft of written section must be in your writer’s notebook.
