  3. 2.1 American Colonies Emerge 1492-1681 MAIN IDEA Spain establishes an America empire, devastating native populations. England forces the Dutch from North America and establishes thirteen colonies.

  4. WHY DOES IT MATTER NOW The influence of these cultures still remains strong modern America today.

  5. Cortes Subdues the Aztec • Conquistadors seek riches. • 1519, Hernando Cortes leads army into Americas, claims land for Spain. • Aztec dominate region; Nahua people who resent Aztec

  6. Cortes Cont’ • Montezuma believes Cortes’ a god and gives him gold. • Aztec rebel, in 1521 the Aztec is defeated. • Cortes founds Mexico City, New Spain colony on Tenochtitlan ruins.

  7. Spanish Pattern of Conquest • Spanish settlers, mostly men, marry native women. • Mestizo -Person of mixed Spanish and Native American ancestry. • Landlords use encomienda -force natives to farm, ranch, mine. • Priest object, encomienda abolished; Africans are brought as slaves.

  8. Other Countries Explore North America • England, France, Netherlands sponsor voyages in 1500s and 1600s.

  9. Exploring Florida • Juan Ponce de Leon discovers and names La Florida (1513). • Spanish expel French and founds St. Augustine (1565).

  10. Settling the Southwest • 1540 Francisco Vasquez de Coronado leads expedition to Southwest. • Pedro de Peralta, governor of New Mexico. • Helps found Santa Fe (1609-1610); several missions built in area.

  11. Conflict in New Mexico • Priests convert many Native American, try to suppress their culture. • In 1670s Spanish force natives to pay tribute, do labor for the missions.

  12. Pope’s Rebellion • Shaman heads uprising in New Mexico (1680). • Destroy Spanish churches, execute priests, force Spanish out. • Spanish armies regain area 14 years later.
