  1. 1836-1846: Politics Martin Van BurenWilliam Henry HarrisonJohn Tyler James K. Polk

  2. MVB deals with Jackson’s legacy • Specie Circular – Jackson/banks require payment in specie (gold/silver) • Banks drained of specie.Paper money worthless.(banks won’t take it, businesses won’t either)Monopoly money • PANIC (depression) of 1837

  3. MVB: 1837-1840 • Democratic philosophy is laissez-faire • MVB does nothing (lets the economy go through the cycle “naturally”) • Whig policies look great – fall of BUS and Specie Circular kill Democrats (economically) • Who will run?

  4. William Henry HarrisonMarch – April 1841 • Hero of Tippecanoe • Identified with westerners, former general • “let him say nothing about his principles” • Log Cabin and Hard Cider campaign • Whigs use Democratic tactics: they portray • Harrison a common man • Van Buren an elitist

  5. “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too!” • Tyler is a sop to the south (VA) • Leading Whigs would advise Harrison (Clay, Webster, JQA) Tyler not a Whig – merely disliked Jackson’s use of veto - ally of Calhoun – appoints him Sec. of State - annexes Texas (slave); North enraged, war nears
