  1. Healthy Food Choices Reading a nutrition fact table summative assessment exemplars

  2. Learning Goals • I am learning to read a nutrition fact table and interpret the meaning of “% daily value” and the amounts indicated beside the 13 core nutrients. • I will then be able to take this knowledge and create a nutrition fact label and ingredient list for a product of choice with a different serving size. As well, I will talk about if this is a healthy food choice. • I will present my new nutrition fact table and justifications to the class.

  3. Success Criteria • Did I: (Ask yourself the following questions or use as a checklist) __ Properly convert the nutrition fact label of a product to a new serving size? __ Include all 13 core nutrients? __ Explain why this product is a healthy food choice __ Present the information to the class using proper oral communication skills: __ Picture of my nutrition fact table __ Visual aids __ Clear, coherent oral communication __ Use clear and coherent speaking skills to communicate my information with the class

  4. Exemplars How do I examine an exemplar? How will we be assessed in this culminating activity? The assessment is comprised of four components: Self-assessment Peer-assessment Rubric Teacher comments (anecdotal notes) • Look for key points from the success criteria checklist. • We will deconstruct the exemplars as a class. As we do this, check off if the exemplar has met any of the success criteria.

  5. Level 4 • Student chooses a product and converts a nutrition fact table to a new serving size with a high degree of accuracy. • Student includes all 13 core nutrients. • Student explains, in detail, why this product is/is not a healthy food choice. • Student presents the information to the class using visual aids and clear and coherent communication skills. • Student is very-well organized and prepared for the presentation and practice is evident.

  9. Is this a healthy choice? (Level 4 answer) • No way! • This is not a healthy choice for our everyday food choices and living. • I know this is not a healthy choice because there is a high amount of sugars under the heading “carbohydrates”. On Canada’s Food Guide there is no recommended daily intake for sugar and to have 32g of sugar in one serving is a lot. • I also know this is not a healthy choice because there is a high amount of fat in one serving. Most people will eat 1 cup of this product and to have 10g of fat and 16% of the daily intake is a lot for one serving. • The last reason I know this isn’t a healthy choice is because in the ingredients list sugar is almost at the beginning, which means there is a lot more sugar than other ingredients, making it unhealthy.

  10. Level 3 • Student chooses a product and fairly accurately converts a nutrition fact table to a new serving size. • Student includes most of the 13 core nutrients. • Student explains why this product is/is not a healthy food choice. • Student presents the information to the class using some visual aids and fairly clear and coherent communication skills. • Student is well organized and prepared for the presentation.

  14. Is this a healthy choice? (Level 3 answer) • Not a healthy choice • This is not a healthy choice for our everyday food choices and living. • There are too many grams of carbohydrates and too much sugar for one serving. • I also know this is not a healthy choice because there is a high amount of fat in one serving. • The last reason I know this isn’t a healthy choice is because in the ingredients list there are a lot of words that I do not understand and there is a lot of chocolate and cocoa

  15. Level 2 • Student chooses a product and inconsistently converts a nutrition fact table to a new serving size. • Student includes most of the 13 core nutrients. • Student explains with some effectiveness why this product is/is not a healthy food choice. • Student presents the information to the class using no visual aids and communicates some information to the class. • Student presents the information slightly out of order and reads from a page.

  19. Level 1 • Student chooses a product and only converts one or two nutrients to a new serving size. • Student includes most of the 13 core nutrients. • Student explains with limited effectiveness why this product is/is not a healthy food choice. • Student presents the information to the class using no visual aids and communicates limited information to the class. • Student presents the information slightly out of order and reads from a page.

  20. Level 1 Exemplar No! Per 1 cup (250 ml)/ Pour 1 tasse (250 ml) 260 Healthy Choice? This is not a healthy choice because there is not enough protein and there are too many calories. 19mg

  21. Check your learning Now, go to your checklist and see if you were accurate with your evaluation of the exemplars and if you understand what’s expected of you for this culminating activity.
