Today In the United States…. • There are approximately 74,800,000 dogs and 88,300,000 cats living in the United States today. • Of those animals, 4,000,000 (that equals 1 every 8 seconds) will be put to sleep because they will never find homes. • Between 6-8 million pets enter pet shelters each year. • The most upsetting statistic of all, there are thousands of cases of animal abuse REPORTED each year in the United States.   3. What is Animal Abuse? • Animal cruelty simply means cruel unwarranted treatment of animals. Such treatment generally has a single point program - to subject animals and sometimes pets to unnecessary harm and pain. One major type of animal cruelty is torture. Josie Atwood

  7. What can be Done? • It all starts with people who care. People like YOU. • According to the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, on July 1, 2007, it became MANDATORY for Veterinary Professionals to report suspected animal abuse. • Even if you’re not a veterinary professional, you can still help. You can call the police or humane society and tell them you suspect animal abuse. Josie Atwood
