  1. FRACTIONS Math 7

  2. SIMPLIFYING • To simplify a fraction means to reduce it to lowest terms • In other words, divide out the common factors between the numerator and denominator

  3. SIMPLIFYING • Simplify the fractions: • Understanding Greatest Common Factor by simplifying: • Since you divided out the common factor of both the numerator and the denominator to get the fraction simplified, then the greatest common factor of the two numbers is what you divided them both by.

  4. FINDING THE GCF AFTER SIMPLIFYING What is the GCF of 12 and 15? What is the GCF of 24 and 48? What is the GCF of 18 and 81? What is the GCF of 56 and 72?

  5. MORE ON GCF FROM SIMPLIFYING • Sometimes when we reduce, we sort of piece it together: • How do you determine the GCF then? • Multiply all of the things you divided by together…this is your GCF.

  6. PART OVER WHOLE • The top is called the “part”. • The bottom is called the “whole”. • Thus, a fraction is referred to as • If the part and the whole are equal, then we say that the fraction is equal to (or 1 whole) • If the part is zero (0), then the fraction is equal to 0

  7. DESCRIBE THE WHOLE • How many minutes make up a whole hour? • How many hours make up a whole day? • How many slices make up the whole pizza? • How many slices make up the whole pizza?

  8. DESCRIBING PART OF THE WHOLE • If Joey worked on his math homework from 5:02pm until 5:40pm, what part of an hour did he work? Write your answer as a fraction in simplest form. • What part of the pizza below is shaded red? Write your answer as a fraction in simplest form.

  9. DESCRIBING PART OF THE WHOLE • What part of the pizza below is shaded blue? Write your answer as a fraction in simplest form.
