  2. Occasion – false teachers called “Judaizers” • Insisted that Gentile Christians be circumcised. • Questioned Paul’s apostolic authority. • Said only Torah gives proper moral guidance. See Gal. 1:6-9; 3:1; 5:2-3, 12; 6:12-13. • Note “ironic rebuke” in place of thanksgiving (1:6). • Note Paul’s anger (esp. 5:12).

  3. Highlights of Galatians • Defense of Paul’s apostleship (ch. 1-2) • Conversion (ch. 1) – his authority comes from God. • Jerusalem Conference (2:1-10) – Jerus. apostles agreed with him. • Incident in Antioch (2:11 ff.) • Inconsistent behavior of Peter (Cephas) divided the church. • Paul publicly opposed Peter. Thesis: “Justified by faith in Christ, not by works of law” (2:16). Key terms: • Justification – being “declared righteous;” put right with God • Faith – trusting God • Grace – God’s unmerited favor; free gift of salvation

  4. Highlights of Galatians – cont. • Five arguments for justification by faith (ch. 3) • Appeal to experience (v. 1-5) • Appeal to Abraham (v. 6-9) • Appeal to the law (v. 10-14) • Appeal to history (v. 15-18) • Appeal to the gospel (v. 19-29) • Law functioned as guardian only until coming of Christ. • 3:28 – human distinctions erased in Christ • Conclusion (5:1-12) – don’t submit to circumcision • Moral guidance apart from the law (ch. 5-6) • Law of love (5:13-15) • Guidance of the Spirit (5:16-26) – “fruit of the Spirit”
