  1. Taking the Abstract to the Concrete By. Leslie Wilbanks

  2. Why Models? Models help students to “see” a concept in order to help them better understand that abstract idea. Models also enable children to learn how to use/play with grown up toys.

  3. The Use of Models in Biology Is this really what an animal cell looks like? Even with powerful microscopes, cells don’t have this 3-d arrangement with beautiful colors.

  4. The solar system in a linear arrangement. Does this ever really happen?

  5. BASE10 & Place Value w/ Manipulatives Students in elementary & some secondary math courses use models to help teach the basic computations that math involves.

  6. Geometric shapes These models are used in math and architecture. They help others to see and understand the 3-dimensional perspective that might be necessary in a specific situation.

  7. Theory of Atomic Structure Too small to be seen – is this a real shapeoris this just agreed upon? How do we know?

  8. Architecture & Design Models are used by architects and engineers to show what the finished product will “look” like before construction begins.

  9. Childrenplay with toys that model actual equipment to give them a better understanding of how things work.
