  1. GRADUATION RULE 1ST DISTRICT RESA MAY 11, 2012

  2. WHY CHANGE THE RULE? • HB 186 AND HB 713 (extends for one year) • Embedded academic courses in CTAE (2 credits for this up to 3 courses) • CTAE teacher becomes highly qualified in content area • Co-teaching • Proficiency based assessments (assessments TBD up to 3 units of credits) • Removal of seat time • Pathways (3 sequential courses) • Advisement is required (schedule should accommodate advising students) • Assessment/transition courses • Dual enrollment opportunities • Split law into separate rules (grad, dual, awarding of credits) • Graduation rule must begin with enrolling ninth graders • Law allows options/opportunities for upper grade level students • Limit the cohort groups

  3. CURRENT GRADUTION REQUIREMENTS • Currently we have 23 credits state minimum • 4 units Math • 4 units Science • 4 units ELA • 3 units Social Studies • 1 unit H/PE • 3 units combination or pathway Fine Arts, CTAE, or World Language • 4 units electives • 23 total (schools may require more units)

  4. CURRENT REQUIRED COURSES • What need to be the foundational core courses (required)? • Current required courses: • 9th grade Language Arts (EOCT) • American Literature (EOCT) • Math I and II (EOCT) • Biology (EOCT) • Physical Science (EOCT) • US History (EOCT) • Economics (EOCT) • Current required non core courses: • Health (½ unit) • Personal Fitness (½ unit)

  5. PROPOSAL • Which core courses need to be required? • Local districts have flexibility to teach courses at whatever grade level their system and community believes is appropriate • Capstone Project or Work Based Learning, what do we currently have that could fit these programs? • Required core courses then pick from a menu of courses that are aligned to a specific pathway. • Graduate once you are a pathway completer • Soft Skills embedded into courses • One diploma with multiple pathway options

  6. PATHWAY PROPOSALS • Not just CTAE courses • Clusters have already been established (17 clusters) • Pathways under each cluster will be established • World Languages, Fine Arts, and STEM will be a pathway for students • Academic pathways (flexible and accommodating) • One additional course in one of the core content areas TBD • 5 maths, • 5 ELAs, • 5 sciences, • 4 social studies, • 4 years of the same world language • 3 AP or IB courses (combination of 3 AP or 3 IB courses are allowed) • STEMS (Math and Science: 3 AP or 3 IB same content area) • Dual enrollment (five core content areas only) • Courses TBD

  7. POTENTIAL ISSUES • How to determine proficiency? • How will this align with the CCRPI? • What would be the impact of the embedded curriculum on staffing? • Credits for completion (pathway completers). What does this mean? • What is the impact on school districts? • Equal access to all pathways for all students • Removing seat time, what could be the implications? • ROTC is it effective in meeting the Health standards? • Best way to embed soft skills into curriculum (not as a stand alone course) • Impact on special needs students (SWD)

  8. OTHER CIA ITEMS • Dual Enrollment • REP under utilized • RTI • Common Core videos • CCRPI
