  11. Giving All Diligence, Add To Your Faith What is faith, according to the Bible? Is faith in the Bible reasonable? How can I strengthen my faith? Faith and works.

  12. What is Faith According to the Bible? How would someone who doesn’t know the Bible define Faith? Unquestioning belief without evidence? Firm belief that doesn’t require proof? Faith REQUIRES examination of the evidence, but does not have proof

  13. What is Faith According to the Bible? The classic Bible definition is in Heb. 11:1 What does “substance” mean? See Heb 1:3 What does “evidence” mean? Faith REQUIRES examination of the evidence; it is an act of the mind (Rom. 10:9)

  14. What is Faith According to the Bible? Faith is essential!! Hebrews 11:6 John 8:24 Faith is so critical that it is sometimes used as a synecdoche for the Gospel (Gal. 1:11, 23)

  15. Is Faith in Jehovah Reasonable? Make Your Faith YOUR OWN! Cosmological evidence The existence of the universe implies a Creator There had to be an uncaused First Cause

  16. Is Faith in Jehovah Reasonable? Teleological evidence Intelligent design requires a Designer Psalms 19:1 and Romans 1:20

  17. Is Faith in Jehovah Reasonable? Internal evidence the Bible is authentic The Bible is free from errors and contradictions The Bible contains countless predictive prophecies

  18. Is Faith in Jehovah Reasonable? Morality is evidence Quarrels indicate an agreed upon standard Humans have a notion that they ought to behave a certain way Morality does not vary as much as many people may think

  19. Is Faith in Jehovah Reasonable? Morality is evidence One may argue against God by claiming that the world is unjust The very concept of “just” implies a standard Where does this standard come from?

  20. Is Faith in Jehovah Reasonable? Morality is evidence Morality goes beyond how we treat others Morality includes improving attitudes and motives, otherwise interactions deteriorate Morality includes the overall direction of life and the intrinsic value of human life

  21. How Can I Strengthen My Faith? Challenge yourself to consider the truth of the things we study this weekend If your faith is not your own, it is no better than a Muslim or pagan “faith” People don’t generally fall away because they consider the evidence

  22. How Can I Strengthen My Faith? Emotions and situations will challenge you to abandon your faith After you have made your faith your own, you will be challenged Don’t abandon your faith; DEPEND ON IT!

  23. How Can I Strengthen My Faith? Daily strengthen your faith so that you will be ready for these challenges Spend time with God’s people, in God’s word studying, and in God’s presence praying Romans 10:17; Acts 17:11; John 20:30-31

  24. Faith Alone is Not Enough James 2 and John 12:42 -> Matt. 10:32-33 Faith will cause your behavior to change If you truly believe something to be true, you will behave as if it is true

  25. Faith Virtue “Virtue” Speaker: Fred Richter A “Well-Rounded” Christian (2 Peter 1:5-11)

  26. Virtue • 2 Peter 1:5 • Faith alone is not enough for the Christian • You must add to faith, virtue I. Meaning of Virtue: • Chastity, purity, virginity, Goodness, Moral excellence, Moral courage, Strength • It takes moral courage to be faithful

  27. II. “Virtue” the value all Christians must Possess • A. Jesus was one who had virtue because he felt it go out of Him. • Lk. 8:43 • 46And Jesus said, “Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that Virtue is gone out of me.”  • What did Jesus feel leave him? • Strength

  28. B. Virtue is found in many Bible characters here are a few • 1. Joseph in Gen. 39:7 • 9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, andsin against God?  • 2. Daniel in Daniel 1:5 • 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

  29. 3. Ruth in Ruth 3:7 10And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followed not young men, whether poor or rich. 11And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

  30. C. Virtue is associated with women in the Bible • 1. Proverbs 31:10 • Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. • Things associated with a virtuous woman.

  31. a. Her husband trust her • b. She does him good and not evil • c. Works with her hands • d. Brings food from afar • e. Rises early in the day to feed family • f. Plants a vineyard • g. Girds her loins with strength • h. She buys wisely

  32. i. She is not afraid of snow because she has prepared proper clothing • j. She is a good seamstress • k. Strength and honor are her clothing • l. She speaks with wisdom • m. She is not one who waste time • n. Her children call her blessed • o. Her husband calls her blessed also

  33. A lady, who fears God, will be praised for her virtue while dating • Most of the time talks are given to the young women about how they should act on a date. • It is just as important for young men to know how to act on dates.

  34. A nationally known speaker who went about speaking to High Schools and other assemblies of young people was speaking to a group one day. • Obviously this happened years ago because he used Bible verses! • Here is a portion of his speech he gave one day:

  35. Smoking • Drinking • Cursing • Lying • Drugs • Sex

  36. He brought to the attention of the young man that GOD does not condone in young men what HE condemns in young women. • It is just as wrong and sinful for a young man to commit fornication as it is for a young woman.

  37. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. (James 1:12-15).

  38. Human sexuality is a gift from God, but one that is intended both to preserve the human race and strengthen the bond between husbands and wives, the family being the backbone of all society (Genesis 2:18-25).

  39. “Flee sexual immorality …. glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”(1 Corinthians 6:18-20) •  Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

  40. Sex outside of marriage is sinful. People engage in intercourse or some lesser form of sexual expression and are “in love” many think it is ok. • “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”(Hebrews 13:4)

  41. D. Virtue must be part of a man’s life • Consider purity, Moral excellence or moral character, goodness, strength. 1.  Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. Ps. 119:9

  42. 2. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the • flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of • God. 2 Cor. 7:1 • Young people fall into temptation before they realize it and they yield to that temptation. • A lack of self control many times is due to getting to close while on a date. It may begin with holding hands, move on to hugging, touching inappropriately, end with fornication.

  43. It is sad to say that some of you know someone either in school or has been in school who has already lost their virginity both young men and women. • You know the girl(s) in your class who any boy can have for the asking. • You guys know of young men who brag about having had relations with some young lady.

  44. Temptation is encouraged by: • Peer pressure • Pride • Lust • Lack of self control

  45. We often sing the song Yield not to temptation #442 • Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin; each victory will help you • Some other to win; Fight man-fully onward, dark passions subdue, • Shun evil companions, bad language disdain, God’s name hold in • reverence, nor take it in vain; Be thoughtful and earnest, kind hearted and true,

  46. The chorus • Look ever to Jesus; He’ll carry you through. Ask the Savior to help • you, Comfort, strengthen and keep you; He is willing to aid you, He • will carry you through

  47. “Flee also youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of pure heart.”(2 Timothy 2:22) • Phil.4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

  48. Rom. 8: 13For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  • True “virtue” is not a tame and passive thing. It requires great energy, boldness, and courage for its very essence is firmness, manliness, independence, and moral excellence in YOU.
