Expository writing is any type of writing that is used to explain facts. • Describe events • Give directions • Present  ideas • Describe objects • Describe a process • The function of the expository essay is to acquaint your reader with a body of knowledge. By explaining a topic to the reader, you are demonstrating your own knowledge.

  3. The purpose of an expository essay is to present, completely and fairly, other people's views or to report about an event or a situation. Expository writing, or exposition, presents a subject in detail, apart from criticism, argument, or development.

  4. When writing an expository essay, do not put forward any kind of emotional arguments or opinions based on how you feel about the topic.  • Expository Essay has no room for one’s personal opinions, at least not till the last paragraph of the essay. Remember that…

Some things you should know while writing an expository essay. • Keep your writing concise and brief.   • Each paragraph should cover one topic and each sentence should present a new idea.   • Use transitory words and sentences to make your essay flow smoothly.  Connect sentences with words like: however, for example, or such as.  Connect paragraphs by having the topic sentence refer back to the preceding paragraph or the thesis statement.   • Quotes can illustrate and enhance a supporting idea.
