  2. The Life of the Filipinos during the Spanish Era. • During the Spanish Era the Filipinos were treated as slaves. • The Filipinos had a very hard and low standard of living. • The Filipinos were treated improperly. • At least 1 million Filipinos lost their lives due to the war that occurred.

  3. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS • King – The King at that time was the head of both the Philippines and Spain. • Governor General- The Governor General was entrusted by to have the highest position in the government. He was the representative of the King in the Philippines.

  4. LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS • The provinces were divided into 2 : The Alcaldia recognized Spain’s possessions over the land. The Corregimientowere the people who were not yet ruled by Spain.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS • The Ayuntamiento was the city government it was the center of society, religion, culture and business. • The Gobernadorcillo governed the pueblo which was like a town, it was the highest government position a Filipino can hold during the Spanish era • The Cabeza de Barangay governed the barrios.

  6. COURT RELATED INFO. • The Royal Audiencia at the time was the supreme court of the Philippines. • The Residencia and the Visitador were the ones who investigated on Governor General and other high ranking officials.

  7. Religion as a means of colonization. • Religion controlled everything during the Spanish Era. • The Spanish conquered the Philippines in one way with religion. During the early Spanish era the Spanish made religion control everything. Magellan's arrival in Cebu represents the first attempt by Spain to convert Filipinos to Roman Catholicism. The absence of centralized power meant that a small number of Spaniards were able to convert a large number of Filipinos living in politically autonomous units more easily than they could have.

  8. Religion as a means of colonization • Magellan (or one of his men) was able to cure or help this young boy, and in gratitude Chief Humabon allowed 800 of his followers to be 'baptized' Christian in a mass baptism. This allowed the Spanish to easily convert more and more people

  9. The Indios • The Indios were native Filipinos residing here even before the Spanish Colonizers arrived. • The Spanish people treated them cruelly. • The Spanish people failed to convert all of these people to Christianity due to the overriding power of the Muslims.
