  2. 1996: • Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI): Surgeons Outcomes Research Cooperative in Otolaryngology (SOURCE) -- an independent, primarily community-based national network of otolaryngologists (point of care and treatment outcomes research) • AAO-HNSF: The Cooperative Outcomes Group for ENT (COG*ENT) -- an outcomes research network (prospective data collection on disease-specific quality of life surveys) • Collaboration between DCRI and AAO-HNSF – evaluating barriers in technology, methodology, design and administration • 2000 - present: • Formal collaboration of COG*ENT and SOURCE -- new network coordinated out of AAO-HNSF – “Building Evidence for Successful Treatments in ENT” • BEST-ENT structures research around hypothesis-driven ideas vetted through the BEST-ENT Steering Committee content and methodology experts. AAO-HNSF’s utility to successful academic-community partnerships (why it’s helpful to partner with organizations with a broad reach and/or grassroots mechanism): • Primary resource for providing research, education and information about the specialty; a conduit to practitioners (academic and community), collaborative allied health professionals, and other medical and surgical societies, as well as patients. • Formal mechanisms for ensuring community/at-large involvement in their research agenda (e.g. Board of Governors/grassroots; Research Advisory Board is comprised of internal and external constituents, including a community/private-practice physician leader. • BEST-ENT network and Steering Committee oversight. • Dissemination (recruitment, results, etc.) through mechanisms like Annual Meeting, Journal, Magazine, website, etc. AAO-HNSF History in Community-Based Research

AAO-HNSF Coordination Leadership: • Communication with PIs and Coordinators • Project leadership & management for all CHEER projects (e.g. clinical scholars; coord conf; data collection project) • Site interface and contacts/profile database • Promotion of CHEER accomplishments through articles, etc. • DCRI Coordination Leadership: • Regulatory requirements • Grant management/financial/site payments, etc. • Technology to develop/support databases/websites • PI and research (e.g. statistics, methods, etc.) leadership and expertise
