  1. Passive sampling of emerging pollutants: NORMAN Expert Group and Europe-wide harmonisationwww.norman-network.net Branislav Vrana Water Research Institute, Slovakia branovrana@googlemail.com

  2. Activities of NORMAN network in passive sampling 2009-2011 An expert group meeting in 2009 A position paper “Passive sampling of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment: state of the art and perspectives” in 2010 An interlaboratory calibrationstudy in 2011 www.norman-network.net

  3. Passive samplers Provide time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations over the deployment time, rather than a snap shot at one moment Are non-mechanical; are easy to deploy and require no maintenance Can be deployed in a range of environments; at sites that have limited security; are remote with little/no infrastructure Are not dependent on a power or other energy supply Used for short (days) or longterm (months) monitoring

  4. NORMAN Position paper“Passive sampling of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment: state of the art and perspectives” Concept of passive sampling Applications in aquatic monitoring of emerging compounds Algal toxins Antifouling compounds – organotin Brominated flame retardants Endocrine disrupting compounds Fluorinated surfactants Organosiloxanes Pharmaceuticals Polar pesticides Sunscreen and ultra-violet filters Document is available at www.norman-network.net

  5. NORMAN Position paper“Passive sampling of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment: state of the art and perspectives” Application in sediment monitoring Application in monitoring of contaminants in biota Application in ecotoxicity assessment Passive samplers as mimics for bioconcentration Which passive sampler suits which bioassay? The link between biological and chemical analysis Effect-directed analysis How does the bioassay response in passive sampler extracts relate to sampler exposure conditions? Quality assurance, quality control and normation Application of passive samplers in regulatory monitoring Future trends Document is available at www.norman-network.net

  6. NORMAN Position paper“Passive sampling of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment: state of the art and perspectives” Table: The established or expected/potential performance of passive samplers

  7. Interlaboratory calibration study in 2011 present variability in data by comparing results from various passive samplers sent by participating laboratories exposed to water at a single (reference) site Target substances: polar pesticides pharmaceuticals steroid hormones triclosan bisphenol A PFOA, PFOS brominated flame retardants will be open for participants from commercial, academic and regulatory laboratories CONTACT: branovrana@googlemail.com Silicone strips

  8. A conference on passive sampling techniques www.ipsw.eu
